Since I got my box of spare parts from Re-evolution (thanks again man!) I figured i would get some work done. The old Dell gave up it's optical cage, and I tell you, It's EXACTLY what I was going to build. I can't believe it worked out so well:

It did take some minimal modding: (sorry for the pic. It says "all these tabs have got to go!")

Pfft....ain't nothing my old friend can't take care of while I drink a brewski:

Room for switches in between them:

Let's add some extrusion to the mix:

We can surely come up with some sort of rigging for the HDD's with the extras I have left over:

A work in progress: (remember, this is just a mock up stage)

Another piece of cylindrical filter element that I salvaged from the scrap bin and straightened: (it might look good powdered and backlit eh?)
