Butcher's Hook - Day 06 - Frame done?
picking up where I left off last night, set up to weld the inside corners of the cross-member in the base of the frame. Just as I set up and was about to start welding, this song came on...

I love it when stuff like that happens

ready to grind the inside cross-member welds

after grinding I needed to clean up the joints, whipped out the dremel and an aluminum oxide grinding stone (orange)

cleaned up nice

I had one weld that missed the mark, so I set it up to grind it out completely

thats the offender (sorry blurry)

ground out (sorry blurry)

rewelded
after this pic I cleaned it up with tthe dremel

time to cut some more steel, thats the 3/8" thick beam for the trolley rail. measured out 12"

set in the chop saw

cutting edge on vs flat made it cut like butter. This cut took 20 seconds literally. I have had 1/8" tubs sections take longer and put up more of a fight. amazing. The piece laying like that wasnt a staged pic, it actually landed like that and stayed upright

brutally clean cut. I love that saw.

decided to knock out the support 45's while I had the saw out

2 45d anchors to go between the base and the uprights

parts cameo shot

marked off for the drillouts for the 1/4-20 screws that will mount the trolley rail to the uprights. For now I drilled them out with the 1/4-20 drill (13/64) but after I use this piece to mark thru to the uprights, I will open the holes to allow the screws to pass thru clean (15/64 drill) Will most likely use a shoulder bolt in this instance. Center punced the marks

used a 3/32 bit to score the center punched marks, then replaced the bit with the 13/64" bit for drilling for 1/4-20. douced everything with tapping fluid and got to drillin'...

curly long stuff curled around the drill bit indicates proper lubrication and good temperatures. slow and steady on the drill press

win

another parts cameo pic

busted out the mouse sander and used some 120 grit on the parts. wasnt completely satisfied with the sand job but lets go build this frame up already

...
the moment of truth, the moment I have been working towards...

and the epic fail of the century

the cross-member prevents usage of the damn clamp!
sat down in amazement, with a beer, and did some thinking

hummed the kids tune to myself...
"when I have a problem, and dont know which way to go,
I think and think and think and think, and suddenly I know"

what if I used the clamp to upright the upright beam, then set the whole s-h-*-t on top of the project base?

I think that will work to get the stuff at least tacked
I didnt tack anything. I want to sleep on that one, but I think its gonna be that solution which is better than the alternatives I have thought of. ideas or opinions on that idea are very welcome
tomr I can sneak in a few hours in the late afternoon
thanks for watching
