Butcher's Hook - Day 17 - star template & star weld tests
time to try and make this template for transferring rotated triangles onto a picec of wood, so I can make the 9 pointed slipknot star on one intersected level

started with a 9" equilateral triangle

after about three times of trying I still ended up with fail. lines from each corner, at 30d (1/2 of 60) should all intersect at one point in the triangle center, they werent

then I realized one side of the triangle was about an 1/8" too short, once I corrected this, it lined up. The three thick sections with scribble are the areas to be cut out, to use as the stencil onto wood

after that I decided to drill out the frame for wires. busted out the nifty right angle drill attachment

clamped and ready

blam. I may widen the holes since one side may need 4 wires for two sep led's, but more on that another day

decided to do a test with the 5/16" bar, cut at 45 degrees on the chop saw, and welded, as opposed hand cut at 30 degrees (saves a lot of work if 45d on chop saw is ok)

only had 2" sections to spare from each 4' piece

great little welding magnet, only does 60d angles outwards (120d), wonderful. needed to try some shenanigans using some scrap metal

I think I am setting sail for fail here...

yep, utter fail. couldnt stike an arc without the electrode sticking to the pieces and yanking them out of position

plan B
cut out some of the template from earlier

used it to mark the angle on some wood pieces I have, then I extended the lines

ground out half-pipe channels in the wood with a dremel stone

basically made a quick squash-clamp that holds the bars at 60 degrees

after some tacking I removed it from the home-made squash-clamp

this is the tacked parts

both sides. I did the tacking with 1/16" stick, then I switched to 5/64 to do the fill-in

blam

sized it up on the template

then sized it up on the frame to get an idea of the star thickness vs the frame. someone said that they thought is would be too thick and not look so good?

Im thinking it looks just right eye-balance-wise, but we may differ on that. the 3/16" stuff looked way too scrawny for my tastes, and the 5/16 seems just right imho...
anyway, thanks for watching
