All I Want To Do Is Upgrade D Mn It

So I am looking to upgrade my video card. I traded off 2 cards and sold 1 card to make room for the Radeon 5870's I ordered them 2 weeks before the release date in hopes to have them the week they were out. Well here we are over a month later and no cards.. so I went out looking for some 5870's here is my story.

I walked into a computer store in winnipeg and I said to the sales guy "Tim, I want to upgrade my PC a little bit." and without asking me what I owned and what I wanted to upgrade he went off about how great the system on sale was and how the price with the monitor and tax was less than a $900.00 for the compete system.

the whole time I am wondering if the way I am dressed ( slednecks tee shirt runners and a snowmobiile jacket) gives off that I am a Dumb jock who and fix a car, truck or snowmobile with ease but have not got a clue about computers and that the only reason I think I need to upgrade is because I can't watch porn any more....

so I asked him if he could show me some parts that could be compatable with my current system as I am pretty happy with the whole setup that I have I just want to get a new video card... I thought this might spark a question of what kind of system do you have... or do you know what your looking for? nope he just said we have this great card the Nvidia GTX 260 this will rock everything out there...

It was at this point I decided that he wasn't going to get the message I was tring to pass on to him and that was ASK QUETIONS so you don't look like a moron! so I said If I put that in my computer my wife would laugh me out of the house and call me names like weak video card boy and super nerd with a crap card.. mostly because she is running crossfire 4870's. the setup I am upgrading is trifire 4890's and I want BETTER!! do you have 5890's or some 5870's?? he just looked at me and said I have no idea what those are..so .I said for starters 2 5870's will cost as much as that system you talked about before... and 1 5890 is almost that price too..

he went off to the back and came out with the manager and he said that they have not got those cards in because the customers of there store don't need that kind of card... I just stood there and blinked and thought I am a custome and I need that card...... I asked him if he could order it... and he said that he would not order it in. because he is a Nvidia partner and his customers don't need ATI he said I should wait for the 300 series of cards.. because they will be better. again I just blinked and looked at him....

and then he said that my system.. (again no question about my compter was asked prior to this statement ) would have to be upgraded to be able to handle the new ati card anyway ... again just blinked when he said are you prepared to do some major upgrades just to put a card in?

I said that my system would have no problem taking that card... and that there was a lesson that could be learned from all of this..

Then he asked me a question... and it was " oh..? and what is that?"
I was blown away...

if you ask the customer what they are upgrading from you can not look like a dick head giving out false advice. becasue with my overclocked I7 965EE running at 4.6 ghz and my 1500watts of power supplies that powering a couple of cards would be no problem and as for the fact that they are freaking long... my case will handle that too... so next time some one askes for an upgrade just ask.. "what kind of system do you have now? don't assume that the person standing in front of you has no clue becasue of how they are dressed.. I am a geek who likes snowmobiling too. thanks for the help and I know that I will never need anything from here again.

So much for going out of my comfort zone... my guy in town here might be a touch more cash than buying elsewhere but at least I don't have to deal with people who have no clue how to deal with simple sales skills. I think that this bothers me on a few levels...

the fact that I was judged as knowing nothing..... and that people can be so narrow minded when it comes to deciding what is best for thier customers.. and not providing a option, and when an informed customer comes in you don't get that customer what they want...I think that is what blowes me away the most.... I want to spent 800 to 900 dollars at his store.. and he doesn't want my money.....

well.. I guess it is just a hurry up and wait for ATI to fill all the back orders and hopefully my cards will be here soon.
