Chimp Challenge F H And Why I Dont Buy Into The Hype And Competition

Cancer sucks. It's painful, it's slow, and it's pretty much invulnerable. I know this firsthand, having watched my childhood friend wither away due to lung cancer. Also, my dad's a smoker, so he's at high risk for getting it(And he worked on cars a lot when Asbestos was used, so mesothelioma is also a possiblity) Doctors get lucky and manage to beat it back often enough, but they need help. Their ability to cure cancer stems from outright poisoning the host to the brink of death and hoping the healthy cells survive longer than the cancerous ones, and often that goes along with coming in and literally cutting out as much as possible if they can get away with it.

That's where F@H comes in. I've folded before, way back when it first came out. I've also put in a few work units for OCN in my time here. I don't fold for points, I don't fold for competitions, I fold because cancer blows.

Now, this time every year, OCN takes part in a challenge. The premise is simple, everyone changes their name to the same thing and starts waggling their e-peens at other teams. The first team to waggle out the set of WU's is the victor.

At first glance, this seems like a good thing. Lots of folding going on. But underneath, IMO, it undermines the very reason to fold. We're not supposed to be doing this because we want to waggle e-peen at EVGA for the rest of the year. We're supposed to be doing this to better cancer research. THAT is why I will NEVER compete in some petty Chimp Challenge. That is why I adblock the chimp logos. That is why I don't like the chimp avatars/signatures.

The big rivalry I've heard of is OCN Vs EVGA. Now, it may sound rude when I say this, but I honestly do not give a rat's ass what a bunch of EVGA fanboys are doing on their forum. I simply don't care. So what if they fold more points than OCN? Big deal.

I don't suppose it's all bad. The points generated by the e-peen waggling still end up at Stanford, and the WU's still end up bettering cancer research. But I still don't like it. I feel it undermines the very reason for folding in the first place.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not against folding. I just don't feel it's right to fold for some petty inter-forum e-peen waggling. It's bad enough people waste hardware and money on benchmarks for the e-peen.
