To overclock,
you'll need good mobo, power supply, and ram.

With that setup, and a decent psu, I could see oc about 2.6-2.7 with some decent aftermarket cooling.
For a single core cpu, I'd go wit the Opteron 146, 148, or the 3700 SanDiego.
Youd still be better off going to AM2 socket (except youd need DDR2 ram that you dont have now).

so the 3700+ san diego would be good? could you possibly pick me out a good asus mobo that is under 100$? a good mobo for that price. i have a 500watt psu already so i think that is enough. im gonna have 1gb of kingston hyper X or corsair. would the Zalman CNPS9000 cool the CPU alot or just enough ?

Im not all that keen on Asus mobos for the 3700 Sandiego cpu.
For about $105. +-, you can have a DFI NF4 Lanparty Ultra D that is well
known to OC better than all the rest. What amperage does your 500watt power supply have on the 12volt rail?

A stock retail cooler would get the 3700 sandiego up to 2.6 without a problem
because the vcore wouldn't require raising. Increasing the vcore is when your aftermarket cooler comes in.

First you want to go to DFI's website and check out the mobo and check ram compatability. Also, go into this sites for sale section for the 3700 sandiego and possible DFI mobo's at reduced prices.
