Default how much Arctic Silver-5 should i use?

i read somewhere i should use half the size a BB of arctic silver 5. so basically thats like a small dot right?? in the instructions of my Scythe Infinity, it says to spread the thermal grease EVENLY on the heatsink.. so do i put a drop of AS5 or a layer of it?

I just put a little dot in the center and twist my block from side to side a little when I seat it... Some people spread it from the center out with a credit card.. Either works just dont use to much and you will be all right...

I'll stick my finger inside a plastic bag and use that to spread it evenly across the CPU... nice thin layer.

I put a dab half the size of a grain of rice on the CPU and the same on the heatsink. I rubbed the AS5 into the heatsink and wiped off the excess AS5.

I tryed that method.

AS5 REALLY doesn't like to spread. Its quite thick and viscous.

Also, if your IHS isnt quite flat, you will get bad temps from spreading it out.

Just putting 1/2 a bb sized amount in the middle, seating the HS and then giving a slight side to side twist works best IMO.

All the above! I've done them all and it's preference really. I just feel better spreading it out a little but be carefull not to use too much as it can leak over and cause problems. It does spread out as it gets hot, and it is only meant to fill the tiny holes between the two parts. A little goes a long way...

I disagree. You really should try using Shinetsu if you want to have a tough time spreading. That stuff's a pain.

I put a dab about the size of a BB in the middle, and let the pressure of the HSF spread it. It may not get as good of temps as it should, but it certainly gets good enough temps for me.

I suppose it also depends on how old the AS5 has been sitting on a shelf in a retailers warehouse etc.

I'd also imagine the temperature it has been stored at would make a difference. ie, if your in a cold environment i'd think itd be harder to spread.

Although AS5 is a weird substance and may not be affected like that.
