Looks good. I achieved a similar finish on my TT 120. I'm going to be lapping my CPU during my winter vacation.

All this effort to have it out of site that extra 5 or 6 degree drop better be worth it, i'm hoping to get my crappy opty stepping to 3Ghz
It is a mild solvent and a mild abrasive, so it removes dirt and smoothes out tiny scratches that are left by very fine (2500+ grit) sandpapers. Basically finishes the job quite nicely. A mirror finish does provide better contact because a mirror finish is the result of having very minor/few imperfections on the surface.

I don't think you went far enough with the lower grits....there's till some curve on the edges...

it's all good though. Looks good.

That's realy an excellent question... as most of us just assume that we can't remove all the small pitting, even with lapping.I agree with Leimrod, that you should try it with , and without, TIM and see if there's a real difference.

Leimrod.. great job.. in the end, this should really become a FAQ!

Got some more pics, I lapped mine and although it seems perfectly smooth and feels like it to I can still see some very undersurface scratches. Just wondering if its just me or does everyone have the same thing.

I have that aswell, although using metal polish drastically reduced the ammount of scratches.

Wet sanding helps to get the metal dust away from the sanding pads and AFAIK helps to get a better finish, but that's just been my experience. You can use water with the EasyPCKits that you ordered. I wet sand and lay my heatsinks all the time.

have you lapped anything with the paper wet? I'd like to get some advice from people that have because seriously I tried a few different grits, different pressures, different amounts of water, and they all result the same... very scratched. The metal shards would clump together in a paste and could not be removed from the sandpaper, I guess if you are wet sanding you have to wash the paper often, which is the only way I could see to remove it.

Also someone mention the edges wheren't smooth, this is because I beveled them at the start because they where catching on the sandpaper, as long as the area that will be touching the IHS is flat and scratch free then you don't have to worry about the edges... i'm making a thermally efficient HS here, not a dandy copper mirror for your ma

I'll get some brasso tomorrow and see where that gets me, i'll also try buffing it with a felt bit on my dremel and the easypckits finishing solution. After this, my Opty's getting its head shaved off next bye bye warrenty
