Lapping is like an addiction really. Every HS I get now I think i'm going to lap or I won't be happy with it.

I bought a HR05 the other day, and guess what... yep I lapped it It was actually very flat I have to say, even from the first stroke across the sandpaper I could see that it was sanding evenly. Still I wanted to get rid of that dull nickel plate and show off some of that naked copper

Does anyone know the reasons behind coating the copper in nickel? Is it to stop it tarnishing or something?

600 Grit, using the SC stuff this time not the micron stuff



Voila, after 10 minutes on 2500 grit and a few rub downs with some brasso

dude, seriously... stop being such a n00b and just post your results with your uber 10000000000 grit paper when you get it. Have a look back at my CPU lap job. I went up to the same level of grit on that. If using grits up and over needed levels floats your boat then go for it. For me, 2500 is sufficient. You won't find many guides or threads on the net that will tell you to go over that. A few polishes after that with some brasso, and you're finished.

btw you won't find any grits above 2500 or anybody else would already tryed it out. that's why. because i found 4000 + and higher i'm probably the first trying it out

I know of plenty of places to get higher? Its also very easy to get polishing paste to use with a rotary tool with a felt head which would do the same thing. But its whether or not it is needed or not. You're not making a mirror here, your making a flat IHS. It is of more importance to have it flat then have it shiny, and you can do that with only 220 grit!

220 grit isn't polishing sanding paper, that grit isn't flat but i get the point. and polishing is the same as making it flat. a super flat surfice act like a mirror, same as glas (and i don't mean polshing round objects)
