Just for show... not really. If you can't get a hold of finer grits, then 600 will help you out. I'm not sure what the difference in temps would be with a 600-grit lapped HS and a 2000-grit HS. I am nowhere close to being an expert on this so anyone that knows please speak up, but I don't think it would be much (2-4C maybe).

Since your HS is concave then once you get it flat I imagine your temps will improve! Just remember that when we talk about improving don't be surprised if it's only a 5C difference or even a 1C difference, every little bit helps.

Great info. Between this and some advice from somehelping me OC forthe first time, I think I will try this soon. However, what exactly is IHC? From context I think it's the top of the CPU, but correct me if I am wrong. Nice job BTW.

nice job and great to see the pics!

although, i wish someone would do a before and after temperature measurement with the only variable being lapped and non-lapped. i just really wonder how much of a difference lapping makes by itself?

also, applying some techniques i learned from detailing automotive paint surfaces, there's a couple of things that might improve the process:

1. definitely wet sand and keep the water fresh by rinsing off the surface frequently. but in addition to water, you can add a little bit (like 1 oz to a half quart bottle of water) of baby shampoo to improve the lubrication. in the automotive world, this helps to avoid making deep swirl marks on paint (which is a lot softer than copper heatsinks).

2. as for polishing, if you are using a proper metal polish, try to find something that acts as a diminishing abrasive. basically, this type of abrasive breaks down as you use it and becomes finer and finer. and as for flatness > shine, I totally agree. To achieve this, you can use a polishing cloth on your flat surface with a dab of metal polish and use the same procedure as you would the sandpaper except don't wet the polishing cloth. that way the abrasives in the metal polish are applied evenly. using a dremel can cause uneven-ness. I would clean afterwards with mineral spirits/alcohol.

Finally, I have question... when lapping the CPU, are you guys also wet sanding the IHS? That sounds dangerous to me if done wet...
