Default LGA 775 HSF (is annoying as hell, but is usable)

I can't stay on too long, so I need fast answers. This is my only computer. My stock HSF will not mount properly. I have a few words to say about LGA 775's HSF mounting, but none of them would pass the censors. I'm bleeding in 5 places from messing with this thing. Every time I get a pin to successfully snap in, the one across from it pops out, even if it's locked. I think this damn this is flat-out defective. I have it on there as solidly as I can get it right now, but either the thermal paste is dead from being in the 70s or it's not on tight enough, right now my idle temps are 65-70 and I'm running full stock.

*** am I supposed to do? I hate this damn socket ... AM2 was so much easier.

EDIT:

Okayz. Steve came over and reset it then taught me how to do it. There are some tricks to LGA775 you must be taught firsthand or learn yourself to make it latch properly. Steve's build dozens of Intel rigs so he has it down to a science and passed it down to me.

Did you keep on taking the HSF on and off? If you do, it will wear off, the plastic side, that's what happen to mine..

You're talking about mounting the stock heat sink?

Look at the top of the pins, you'll see arrows. The either curve and point inward or outward.

Inward = UNLOCK
Outward = LOCK

What I do is, I set all the pins into lock position and then place it on top of my CPU and press it down. This way it's much easier because you don't need to turn and lock it and then press it down.

Also, make sure the bottom of the pins is not bent and deform, or it would get stuck on the motherboard's hole.

I think that's what happened. Need a solution.

push it at the center so it goes down evenly, any twist the thumb screw things with a flathead screwdriver, its easier that way.

My way's easier, because when they're all in lock position, you press down one pin and it'll stay lock, and you can easily press the other ones down without having the others pop up.

I don't care what any of the Intel-ers say, these HSF's retention system is utter cheapness compared to anything I've built from AMD. When I first seen how it worked, I was like, no way, we trust our CPU's to little azz peices of plastic? Cheap plastic at that? I still don't trust that thing on mine, need an aftermarkert asap...and I am aware others love their stock 775 HSF's, but I think you all are crazy.

Everything I try fails. I can have one pin totally locked in place solid. The instant I push it's diagonal opposite in, it pops out. The locks do NOTHING. I think this damn thing's defective. My high temps in OCing were actually a result of it only being secure on 3 pins. Now I've just made it worse. Do I need to get the AC Freezer 7 now? Would that be a solution? I think the plastic on this POS is just worn down to uselessocity.

I was gonna get an aftermarker cooler anyway, but it wasn't a priority. Well now it is.

God, I hate Intel!

Going to keep messing with this ... when I get my paycheck I'll get an AC Freezer 7, and some AC5.

The AC Freezer 7 is awesome. Just be aware that it's got the same plastic locking push pins like the stock HSF has.
