You need 1000+ grit wet/dry sandpaper, something very flat, and lubricant.
Home Depot will probably have up to 1200 grit, which is fine. Flat object is a piece of glass, lubricant can be anything to tapping/ drilling lube, to WD40, to dish soap, to plain water.

Alot of people on OCN use this site, he is a very friendly guy. It doesn't seem to be loading for me though, maybe the server is down or maybe he doesn't do it anymore. I'm not sure.

I just lapped my Big Typhoon.
I got an 8" x 10" piece of glass from Home Depot for a little under $2.00. They also had wet/dry sandpaper in 320-400-600 grit. I had to get the finer paper at an auto parts store. Pick up a Sharpie while you're at it. You can use it like a machinist uses layout die. What I did was cover the entire surface with the ink from the Sharpie while I was in the 320 grit stage of lapping. This showed me where the high spots were. A granite surface plate would be awesome for lapping. I should pick one up sometime. Granite Surface Plate and... Another Granite Surface Plate

ok I just got back from the hardware store where I picked up some 600 grit and 1500 grip paper (what they had) I suppose it would have been nicer to get more like 800 or 1000 and then 1500 to finish it off, but I am sure it will do...
I guess I will start off with my Noctua as opposed to the TT, get some practice... so after doing the 600 should I do the marker thing where you get a sheet all "dirty" with a sharpie and slide the cooler on it to see the high and low spots?
