Default Lapping questions

okay so i am considering lapping my cpu and heatsink. I know alot of people use that little black plastic thing to protect the cpu when they lap it but i seem to have lost that at some point in the lap 8 months. what should i use to protect the bottom of the cpu if i lap it? and my other question is how much of a temperature decrease should i see from lapping just the heatsink or both the cpu and heatsink?

Foam for CPU.

I killed my CPU (E6300) by lapping it even though I thought I wouldn't, and it most likely was because I dry sanded, got enough static to kill it while I was lapping. I was babying it on how I lapped, so pressure and where I was holding it had no effect on it.

I wouldn't lap. Chances are you won't kill it, but I thought I wouldn't too. Then again, probably in 2 months I'll be lapping this one too, so it's up to you.

Lapping my heatsink (SI-128) on my un-lapped E6300 got me 4C off, and my CPU died so I could test how much after lapping that. >.>

lapping is sanding down the heatsink to make it more flat therefore having better contact with the cpu and keeping it cooler.

anyone ever lapped a scythe ninja?

I would recommend lapping a crappy processor (WET, like, with water), letting it dry out, and seeing the results before attempting this with your best CPU.

I've never lapped a Ninja (that sounds kinky by the way) but I did my 4300 and Zalman 9500. I didn't have the plastic piece on the CPU when I did it, I just used a little water and I was careful not to touch the contacts. I got about a 7c drop in temps and was able to push my 4300 from the 2.8Ghz it was running to 3.0Ghz 100% stable, and I lowered my vcore as well

Tips:

1) TAKE YOUR TIME! There is no reason at all to rush through it and every reason to take your time and be careful.

2) Use a little water. By a little, I mean 2 or 3 drops at a time. You aren't bathing the CPU.

3) Tape the sand paper to a flat piece of glass. A glossy picture frame glass will be fine.

4) Use a Sharpie (or other "write anywhere" marker of your choice) to draw an X across the surface to be lapped. When the X is completely gone, the surface is flat unless you did something weird.

5) Don't stop until the surface is 100% flat. Also remember you are going for a flat surface over a mirror finish. If the CPU is smooth as ice but has a huge crater in the middle, your temps will still suck.

6) Use a tiny amount of thermal compound when reseating the cooler. The compound is only meant to fill in imperfections. You want as much metal to metal contact as possible and the compound should only be enough to fill in any scratches. If it flows out between the CPU and cooler, you've used too much.

Good luck and remember to post your results

I wet sanded both the CPU and cooler, on all grits. I only had up to 800 grit paper so I finished with Brasso (abrasive metal polishing compound). Keep your fingers, water, and debris off the contacts and you'll be fine.
