Default IFX-14 + P5K Premium - Fitment Issue

I received my IFX-14 and it definitely is one big mutha of a heatsink.

Couple of issues though. I'll NEED to lap it, as the base is horribly convex. Convex to the point of putting it on a flat surface, and I can push it and it rocks and wobbles (Weeble-14?), so that was a major disappointment.

Another issue is the backplate and it's orientation (has a specific orientation in order for the back-side cooler to install correctly) and it conflicts with one row of capacitor pins on the backside, so it will not sit properly

Not only does UPS ship my stuff to the wrong place (mobo, cpu, ram...and still can't find em) but Thermalright is losing their grip on quality control!!

Easy fixes though, just time consuming: modify backplate to clear the row of capacitor pins, and lap the 80 dollar heatsink

I can't find the link right now but TR said they made it slightly convex to match most CPU's being slightly concave. I'll try to find the link and update.

Lapping the CPU will be my last ditch effort, whenever the cpu arrives

I'll look around for info on the reasoning behind a convex base, thanks!

Yeah most CPUs have a slight conclave so they were probably just trying to even things out.. If it were true then lapping it flat might actually make temps higher :\

Duly noted! I'll play the waiting game, I'm really not all that excited about trying to lap that heatsink (really no way to hold onto it without getting creative!)

After modifying the backplate for the IFX, I installed the heatsink along with 3 Vantec Stealth 120mm fans. I'm noticing ample airflow through the heatsink, and currently game for a couple of hours at no more than 42 degrees (stock speed at the moment) on a reportedly multi-threaded game.

I have not lapped the heatsink yet, and I don't think I will be anytime soon.

I've got to work on loading this processor up to see what kind of max temps I will see, and soon I will be overclocking it

With crossfired X18's and the IFX with 3 fans, you can barely see the motherboard at all!

I like this heatsink although mine arrived with a nice flat surface.

Mine actually rocked. I could set it on a flat surface, push on one side, and it would rock

Installing was not difficult after modifying the backplate, and I'm VERY happy with the temps so far. Still need to do more testing though!

thermalrights QC is not going down, its to combat increasingly concave CPUs
