i think I would've slit my wrists if I'd had to get that base flat on one piece of 400 grit paper. Maybe my HSF was just EXTREMELY concave, but it took like 4-5 hours at 180 grit.... I would highly recommend a course kit if you're going to be removing any substantial amount of material....

Absolutely superb guide, TriBeCa
![]() I joined this forum after reading your lapping guide. Currently, I am upgrading to an E6850, Abit IP-35 Pro, Antec 900, etc. with various Thermalright heatsinks, Ultra 120EX, Hr-03 Plus, and HR-05/HR-05SLI. I started lapping the heatsinks and am giving my hand a day to heal from the cuts I got from the HR-03 Plus fins Gloves are a great idea, noted! As expected, the heatsinks are in various degrees of concave/convex and stuttering is to be avoided. I had some stuttering on the HR-05 and have to re-do it to get rid of the curved edges from that. I used water on the lower grits but will try the higher grits dry now.I intend to post my results from all of this once the system is finished ![]()

hey, thanks! and good luck!
also keep in mind that only the actual contact surface needs to be flat...a little curvature on the very edges of a HS isn't the end of the world, as long as the part that actually contacts the chip or IHS is flat. the contact area on most sinks is a fair bit larger than the part that actually touches anything when it's installed. you can actually see in that last pic I posted of the HSF-IHS contact that there's still some light showing on the sides, but I didn't worry about it.

Your photos with the lamp shining through the "gap" between the heatsink and cpu really help to illustrate the flatness of the lapping. A slight bevel on the edges does help to reduce the stuttering, I find the most difficult part is removing the nickel plating and levelling out the base. Once that is done the copper base sands quite easily. A guy could go crazy trying to achieve perfection on these things
![]() Good luck with your motherboard. I have flashed many boards numerous times with no problem except the one time I screwed up an Asus P4P800 with a bad flash. Had to replace the bios chip on that one to fix it ![]()

Looks great!
Just to let you know, the heatsink is covered in a zinc coating, not aluminum. Aluminum would corrode with the copper.

Which lapping kit would you recommend? Premium?

Thx TriBeCa! I'll go lap my "overheating" C2D E4300 when I get a chance.

definately get a premium kit with glass (unless you already have the glass...and for future laps you can get a cheaper refill without the glass).
however, you'll also need some lower grit paper to get the base flat in the first place. either get a course kit as well (or if you want you can get a tube of AS5, arcticlean 1 and 2, and both kits for like $21, which is what I did) or go to your local hardware store and get a sheet or two of 120 grit paper. good luck!
