My wife designs jewelry, and I do a bit of metal and lapidary work for her.

3M makes wet or dry abrasive films for lapping purposes (3M IMPERIAL MICRO-FINISHING FILM). It is avaiable 8 1/2"" by 11"" sheets in seven grades from 80 microns (180 grit) to 9 microns (1200 grit) with or without pressure sensitive adhesive on the back. Either the pressure sensitive type or the other with contact cement is a lot easier and stays a lot flatter than a taping method. Also if you really want a mirror finish, a slightly different product is available in 12, 5, and 3 micron.

Ths source I usually use is www.riogrande.com. Individual grades or assotments may be ordered. Individual grades or assortments cost from 1 to 2 dollars a sheet depending on what you order.
