My dad spray painted 3 or 4 fans that he used for a good while. It doesn't seem to harm anything.

As long as the motor isn't exposed to the air and is sealed your fine.

i spray painted the side fan in my 900 and it's been going strong for a few months now. just as long as you tape off the sensitive areas and don't go crazy with the paint, you'll be fine.
