Default Bad Temps no matter what cooler

My room is very cool. 13C. But no matter what, I always get high CPU temperature.

When I first installed my rig back in November '06 with stock cooler, I was getting 50C+ idle at stock voltage.

That was the past.

Then I got 72C load with the Zalman 9500. I then thought buying a Tuniq Tower would solve my temp. problems.

I installed that a few weeks ago and I'm getting 58C load @ 1.37v in my 13C cool room. That is too hot..

I have reseated the TT twice and nothing has changed. I used the thermal paste which came with the TT and applied a rice sized amount in the middle of the CPU. Still no change, 58C load @ 1.37v. 13C ambient.

My side case must be off as when on it adds +3C to load temp. I don't have a case fan.

At the moment I tried to see if airflow was the issue, but it seems not:

This made a 2C difference. I get 56C load with this big fan on slowest setting(still quite fast).
Is there any other position for this big fan which would yield better results? (my case must be on its side in this position until I receive two screws which I ordered for the TT, yes I lost two of its screws)

Can anyone suggest what's causing the problem and what I'm able to do to solve it?

It sounds like something is concave or convex.

If I were in your position right now, I would go get a razor and take your CPU out. Clean the thermal paste off and stand the sharp side of the razor gently on your CPU. From there, stick your razor on top of your CPU at a good shining light. If you are able to see any light under the razor, your IHS is concave.

Do that to your heat sink(s) as well.

EDIT: To fix the concave and convex CPU/ heat sinks, you have to lap them.

Oh yeah, about the thermal paste. Since you have dual core, you should use the line method over the dot in the middle method.

If you look at your CPU, you should know where to find that little golden triangle thing on the bottom right corner. From that position, dual core users should apply a line of paste the same amount as 1/2 size of a rice grain, but stretched out to a line.

Quad cores go up and down.

Just don't stretch the line all the way to the edge of the CPU.

I will try that razor blade tip tonight then.

I'm sure I put on enough "High performance thermal compound" TX-1.

Borked?

I don't know how important this is, but here's some more information:
Temp in BIOS: 27C
Idle Temp in Windows: 45C
Load Temp in Windows: 53-55C
Vcore: 1.375v

You might just suck at applying thermal paste.

First get some AS5. Then use Audi's AS5 Mod. You put a mechanical pencil head on the end of your AS5 tube, and apply AS5 through that. It is much more precise and a line of that down the middle of the CPU is ALL you need. It's idiot proof.

IF that fails, then something needs to be lapped. Try the razor blade or just look at your IHS and HSF, you can probably spot it with your own eyes.

I believe it is a combination of both poor thermal paste application and concave/convex IHS, and HSF.

Ok. Will do that. Thanks.

BTW, that huge fan reduced my system temp by 8C...

Thanks.

Damn! In that case I certainly did put too much on then. I gotta buy one of those pencils now and some AS5 from somewhere...
