Default lapping problems

ive lapped both my hsf AND 6600. has a perfectly good meeting face as seen here

andmy finger is there just to block light.

but as you can see from the reflections. the hsf isnt as good for some reason. both are 2000 grit but why is the hsf so much worse?

Wow.... looks like you use WAAAAAAAAY too much thermal paste.

I mean, WAY too much.

It's all over everywhere. Yikes!

For the IHS, you want to remove all the silver and get down to bare copper.

You only want to use the tiniest bit of AS5.

I start at 220 and get it down to where it is perfectly flat... make sure to use canned air every few minutes until you're flat and down to the copper with the 220, use each higher grit for only a few minutes until it glides smoothly across the paper, then move up to a higher grit.

If you only have 1000, I'd suggest getting a couple sheets of 220. At Orchard Supply you can buy individual sheets. I'd get one each of 440, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, and several 220...

well no i can get up to 2000 from my local autoshop but i saw a kit online that had micro sanding sheets. beyond 2000.

the main thing im afraid of is taking too much off and it not making contact. especially in the hsf.

and i broke one of the connecting pegs on my hsf. those little turn and push pins that go into your board. can i buy those or ask somewhere for a spare?

You don't really need anything more than 1000 grit. 2000 will get you a nice mirror.

Those "lapping kits" always don't have enough sandpaper, IMO.

Not sure about the pins...
