I just installed this cooler, cleaned everything first using akasa TIM clean, applied Arctic Silver 5 as per the instructions and fitted the cooler and made sure it is seated properly, and the fan is connected.
__________________Idle temps seem fine but when using orthos to do a blend stress test the temps keep rising after abouts 45 secs they are hitting the 75C mark, if I let it continue it shuts down shortly after. any ideas?

Something is definitely not right. What are you using for your temperatures. Also, are you sure you layed the HSF flat on the CPU without lifting it up slightly?

I'm using coretemp, speedfan and everest.

Is the mating surface flat and smooth or rough?
That is, did you lap it? Temp reports and the Brisy What is the reported BIOS temp, it should reflect about 80% of the windows full load temp.

The coretemp won't work with your Brisbane. I used to get funky readings when I had my 3600+ Brissy.
__________________I would go back to the old school way of checking your temp. If you can get your hands on an IR gun you'll be able to see exactly how hot your HSF is, which will give you a general idea of how hot the CPU is. Or you can just touch the HSF with your fingers to see how hot it is. Are you on stock CPU settings? If so I really wouldn't worry about your temperatures all too much. Check Asus to see if they have any BIOS fixes for the Brisbane. This was a problem with motherboards almost a year ago with the 3600+ Brisbanes that were released. Nothing to get too worried about just yet. I think it's a mistake on the temp read as long as you're pretty confident that you set the HSF right.

I did not lap the heatsink.
__________________Everything is on stock speeds. I just updated the BIOS to a newer version, still getting duff temp readings. after running orthos to the point it shuts down (approx 2-3mins) I had a good grope of the cpu HSF and mobo HS, the heatsinks on the mobo seemed a lot warmer than the cpu. The cpu was certanly not 'hot'. The BIOS reads around 50C when I go into it after startup

Make sure the lever is all the way down. Also make sure the tension bracket is properly seated on the base, like so:
![]() Pity about cleaning off the stock paste. It's AC's MX-1(maybe MX-2 now) and is very good. Better than AS5 in most cases.

The Arctic Coolers, Big Typhoons and many after market HS are very rough and seldom flat. There for the need to lap them for the best thermal transfer.

update - I took the cooler off and cleaned it, re-applied AS5 (slightly less this time - about a grain of rice) then reseated.
__________________temps this time rose even quicker, then windows would not load as the machine shuts down shortly after startup. Going into the BIOS straight away I can see the temps rising under idle. I think the way forward will be to lap it as The Duke suggested, the base is very rough although Arctic Cooling state this is intentional?! Looks like a trip to the DIY store on the way home from work!
