Default New way to apply thermal compound

After a less-than-satisfying first attempt at mounting a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme using their instructions on applying thermal compound, I decided to try something new.

I took a butter knife, and spread the thermal paste on the CPU and on the HS as if I were spreading butter on toast.

Seemed to work out fairly well too: 28C idle, 45-50C load on an E4300 @3.06GHz with 1.46Vcore (up from 1.325V stock). Anyone ever try this application method before?

lolol,
butter knife thats funny but a decent idea,
I dunno one thing i have found with as5, is when u cover the whole thing with a thin layer it doesnt work even close to good, because its not gooey like other pastey,
its more pastey, so it doesnt like to stick to other surfaces very much
when i spread a thin layer over my cpu, my temps rocket to 55,
than when i put a line down the centre, dropped to 44

The way to apply AS5 is to put a small dab th size oof a BB on the center of the IHS and then to press the HS onto that and to rotate it a little bit to squish it then try and pick up th moboo with the hs--you should be able to lift the whole mobo right off the table with the HS if it's on there right (with nothing but AS5 lifting:no hardware)

I have seen numerous threads where all sorts of elaboarte methods are employed...mechanical pencil nibs, plastic baggies, credit cards, etc etc.

I have seen many many posts here and other forums about how incredibly important it is to clan the IHS and HS with all sorts f rubbish.

I have seated Hundreds of blocks on CPUs. I have tried all th methods I come acorss. Guess what: you can use the same exact method and get twoo cmpletey different temp readins.

Yep:: it's like throwing dice. Unless you are willing to reseat the HS at least two dozen times too establish a trend or averag then it's not going to be data...

A good reslut from how the HS munts is apparently mor cmplicated than how mush AS5 or how it's applied.

There are other factors (unknown to me) that will give a variance on temps as grat as 5C from mount to mount all things being apparently the same.

Too much TIM is not going to hlp but hurt: that sems to be a fact. But how the TIM is applied does not seem to be the deciding factor. Nor does the cleanliness of the surfaces.

I have gotten a lucky mounts on a surface I wiped with an old sock and no cleaner...

I have gotten crappy mounts on a surface I cleaned with alcohol and a coffee filter...

If what you are doing is giving you lower temps good deal! But in order to determine if the butter knif is the key to your success I suggesst remounting the block at least another 20 times and seeing what tmps you get.

IMO just follow the instructions that came with the compound.
You'd think that the company would know the best (if not most effective) way to apply their own product. I'm sure they tested many different methods and decided on the most efficient.

Remember: "It is not the method you use, but the amount you use." As soon as you put the heatsink or water block down on the chip, it will spread out as evenly as it can (given the surfaces are both flat), so as long as you get the correct amount placed, you shouldn't have any problems.

I've always used the little BB method until I got my C2D and switched to the line down the center... I've never noticed any differences, but then again I didn't pay much attention to it either. If you are really worried about getting the almighty perfect amount and placement of your TIM, do a little project/research and try different methods and see what works best for you... and don't forget to share the results with us (lots 'n' lots of pics)

EDIT: don't forget... ambient temps DO change your results so try to keep ambient constant during tests
