Im looking to OC(details here) my year and a half old 4800+ and my stock-ish cooler isn't gonna cut it. I'm only going to push it from 2.4ghz to 2.6-2.9. I have a feeling i don't need a Ultra 120 Extreme to cool that but stock wont do.

If you're on a budget, get a AC Freezer Pro 64 and lap it (and your CPU's IHS if you're an avid warranty voider like myself)
Personally, I've used this cooler with: a lapped IHS opty 165 (2.85GHz---1.475V---idled @ 33C loaded @ 47) an IHS-less opty 170 (2.9GHz--1.475V---idles @ 31C loads @ 45) I would say that those good OCs and temps considering the voltages

lapping is when you sand down the cpu and/or heatsink to a mirror finnish to make it transfer heat better (usually takes about 8 hours)
using cpu z what are your core voltage reading

Aftermarket heatsinks are generally already pretty flat, but the finish isn't too great... most people lap this first because it's not as "risky" as the CPU's IHS... HOWEVER, the IHS is generally concaved (or convex? can't recall) so lapping it flat allows for outstanding contact and a sweet drop in temperature... alternatively, you can just pop the IHS off and expose the chip itself, allowing for even better temp decreases! Lapping also doesn't necessarily take 8 hours (unless you're OCD like some of us).... You can use: 200grit paper until the surface is flat 600 until the grooves caused by the 200grit are gone then jump up to 1500 or 2000grit for a finish... this method takes >1 hour and works just as well Lastly, the temps I posted are with 1.475volts on both chips... they were both stable at 1.45volts however, and temps would have been even lower... I just bumped it up to 1.475 because temps allowed and a little extra voltage ensures total stability (in my mind)

Cheese, if you're interested in lapping ( and you should be if yer gonna overclock ), you can get various grits of wet/dry sandpaper at 3guys auto stores, autozone, and ( dare I say it ?) , Walmart auto section. Start with 800 grit, work your way through various grits til you finish with 2000 grit.

Blasphemy! Blasphemy and heresy I say!
![]() Also, I would suggest only using 1500 for your highest grit... most people are over zealous and spend 3x the amount they need to by snagging 1000, 1500, and 2000 (i only mention these as they're the hard to find auto paint grits - the rest are inexpensive and can usually be found at home)... All you'll really need is: 200grit 400grit 600grit (or 800grit) 1500grit (or 2000grit) glass surface (photo stand cover works perfectly)
