Default T.R.U.E vs lapped T.R.U.E or why it's worthy to spend money on sandpaper ;) [56k w]

Hi folks,

for quite a while I've seen people writing about their lapped T.R.U.E's and the excellent performance they're getting with it. After owning it half a year I've decided to lap it as well.

So I went to market today and bought some sandpaper, with 400, 600, 800 and a 1000 grits. There wasn't anything higher available but I wanted to give it a try anyway. Other than the sandpaper I bought a small piece of glass.

After coming home, I was looking for a guidance on ocn and I was quite pleased that GuardianOdin had made a short, but excellent guide a few days ago.
http://www.overclock.net/other-cooli...-heatsink.html

Though not being sure if I had the appropriate materials I started with the adventure anyway.

Temps before the lap job:

Idle:

Load:

These temps are with an ambient of 21 degrees celsius and stock voltage.

After measuring the temps I prepared the T.R.U.E and work utilities:

sandpaper: 400, 600, 800 and 1000 grits

ready to go:

[IMG]http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/1111/dsc02423xy8.jpg/IMG]

and the problem

I'm not sure if you can see it, but the base was in the middle higher than on the ends (equals higher temps), here you can see this as well, as the copper is first seeable in the middle of the base:

after a one hour -fight:

reapplying as5 (far away from perfect, probably gonna redo it :S)

T.R.U.E in the case:

Then I plugged in everything I needed to start the computer and was eager to start coretemp:

Idle:

Load:

I was astonished by the difference of the lap job, though I must say that it could be possible that the ambients were lower. Anyway, the lap job was far from perfect and even now it brought the temps down. So thumbs up for everyone who's doubting the effects of a lap job on a true. It's been perfect for me, now it's just plain godlike .

Greets luk

edit: sorry for the bad picture quality, I hope you get the message (true ftw)

Nice work! A few areas of improvement:

1) Lap both surfaces for the ideal contact patch. Yes its a bit worrisome to lap a nearly $300 piece of electronic equipment, but the reward outweighs the risk.
2) Reduce the image sizes, maybe use a site like Imageshack that will upload and scale the images down for you.
3) Overclock higher!

You might want to try with less thermal paste. looks like allot for a lapped Hs.

That is nice though.

But the pictures are a TINT too huge, or maybe it's because I have a very small screen. Temps should get better in time, I believe since you also placed thermal paste on it, it takes time to melt and fill in the pores.

What's with the fan orientation, why's it on the back side pulling air?
Should be on the frontside pushing air.

Nice work, wish was on my ws monitor

After lapping both HS and CPU my temps were down about 5-6 degrees also. When stressing using Orthos my temps never go above 61 degrees running 3440mhz.

nope, pulling gives cool temps.

what you should do, is remove that rear case fan, and put it as a push and have a push pull system going.

also, resize pics. my 1680 1050 cant handle them lol.
