Has anyone tried lapping a Direct Heat Pip Heatsink such as the Xigmatek HDT-s1283 or the Zaward? (http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.ph...1&limitstart=3) I've seen that most of these HDT Coolers are posting amazing results but all sport very roughish bases, Less than that of trues, but outperforming Thermoelectric coolers in some cases

If you do lap it, go straight away with 1000+ grit. You dont want to sand of too much of the pipes, because then, logically, they would transfer less heat since they are thinner at the base.
Id say its completely safe to just make it smooth and shiny.

i would not lap that...i would let some magazine or crazy person try it first. I havent heard of anyone trying, because you dont know how thick the bottom of the heatpipe is, and if you lapped it you could sand all the way through it. the direct heatpipe works really well already, beats tt and true in many cases.

Yeah, this specific model out Temps Ultra ChillTec's Thermal Electric On load; and almost matches it at ambient ; and several water setups, Not only that, since the new 45 NM Chips arn't really about heat temping anymore, it's a perfect solution without having to install an entire water setup imo. I was thinking the same thing about the thickness, mainly because of Coppers price I wouldn't think they would make it very thick in order to help with converting the heat directly into the liquid and cooling. Now then, Lapping the CPU would most likely give me a fair increase even with HDT right? Arg....Taking sandpaper to a $250 proc makes me cringe...lol. Though I've seen the methods and info to back it up, I also take note that noone posts their horror stories of sanding too much, ruining their chip etc. Not EVERY single lap could be that good <.<. What could I expect , about 3-5C Ambiant/Load temp drop? I'd love to go to 3.6 on air

I think you would only want to lap those in an effort to make them perfectly level. You would need to be very careful with them too.
