You're confusing the ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme with the Tuniq 120, the Tuniq can only be mounted one way, or else the person who reviewed it doesn't know what HE'S talking about.

And I thought that most heatsink fans blow the air AWAY from the motherboard, not towards it. It seems I'm confused as to the direction the air is flowing...even though it's called "downward" it's actually "upward". You don't want to blow hot air from the heatsink back onto the cpu do you?

In contrast, a Big Typhoon (or any down-blowing heatsink) directs its air flow "down" onto the motherboard. The air movement is perpendicular to the motherboard plane, therefore making the air move and helping in dissipating the heat near the CPU socket. Since VRMs/PWMICs are mounted next to the CPU socket, this kind of cooling setup helps cool those items. There are no dead spots in a setup like this. Think about it this way: Why do AMD AND Intel supply coolers that blow down onto the CPU socket? ![]() Quote:

I still have the tuniq 120 in my cart. I'm hesitant to push the checkout button because I'm getting mixed signals. I assume that a 140mm "blowhole" fan above the PWM components will help cool them enough. And that a 120mm fan would be blowing the air across the mobo while another 120mm (along with the 140mm would be sucking the hot air out.
__________________Also my Rocektfish case has a 120mm fan near the PCI slots to help pull out hot air. Would all of these fans be enough? 2 X 140mm, 3 X 120mm

Since no one has given you a shot of a downward(to MB ) blowing cpu cooler here ya go....
![]() ![]() ![]() This shows that the cooler pulls air from the outside and forces it through the cooler and down onto the MB and across my mosfet cooling fins. Now with my case I have 3 120mm fans exhausting that air out so if you do not have the proper airflow in your case for such a cooler I think it would hinder you overall cooling.

I would imagine that 5 120mm fans would be plenty of airflow, even with a perpendicularity-mounted cpu fan that would help even more to increase airflow being that it blows the hot air directly to the exhaust fan rather than blowing it all over the motherboard first.
__________________i wonder what is actually better to cool the chipset... alot of warm air being blown on it, or a little cool air being blown past it. Nice RAM cooling BTW

Not including my TTBT 120, I have 7 120's in my case and I lowered my temps by switching from a Zerotherm BTF-90(92mm). I tried it both ways, blowing straight out the rear(1 120) and blowing to the top of my case(2 120's).
Thanks for the comment.

For those who are interested (Carlin), here is the blog entry that actually speaks about this topic.
I hope it makes for interesting, provocative reading. ![]()
