I don't know what the proper terms are to describe the two types of cooling methods, but I will probably be getting an Abit IP35 Pro motherboard for my Q6600. I'm concerned because a populr review of the motherboard suggested that the heatpipe design was meant to go with a downward style heatsink fan.
__________________I have the Rocketfish Full Tower case and was considering the the Tuniq tower 120, but now I'm not so sure. "... based upon our initial overclocking tests, if a vertical mounted fan in an air cooling unit such as the Tuniq 120 or water-cooling is utilized then additional air cooling will be required on the MCH and PWM areas. In other words, the heat pipe system works best with a downward blowing CPU HSF fan in mind." http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3142&p=2

If you have decent airflow in your case it wont make much diff and probably be better to go with the tuniq

Sideways airflow is better. You have a fan inputing air in the front, and a fan blowing it out the back. It makes sense to have it sideways.

The Rocketfish has three 120 MM fans. I can always add another fan as this case is endlessly moddable. Most likely I will add a blowhole and put in a 200mm fan.

i would mount it like this, blowing out the back:

I believe the Tuniq can only be mounted in one direction, out the back, by default. Now what I will probably do, instead of the blowhole, is to put a fan inside the 5.25" drive bays to increase the airflow towards the heatsink.

Just for clarification: Do you mean a heatsink with fans that blow down onto the motherboard plane (perpendicular to it, as with an SI-128SE or a Big Typhoon), or parallel to the motherboard (Tuniq Tower 120, Ultra 120/120 Extreme)?
I think that the anandtech article supports one of my theories, that a heatpipe-cooled motherboard needs a perpendicular-blowing heatsink specifically to cool the CPU socket's periphery (where the VRMs/PMWIMCs are). As an aside, the blog entry I'm presently working on will speak about this very topic... ![]()

![]() I'm pretty sure it wouldn't matter as long as you have rather ample cooling in your case. 3 120MM's should be decent, possible add another intake fan.

The 120 can be mounted either way......how can he not know that?

Going Broke Overclocking

It appears he is confusing "downward" with opposite of bottom to top air flow where as its referring to a HS that blows air down on to the MB and not across it like a stock HSF or BT.
