Default Mod Slot 1 HS into NB HS?

Okay, so I am buying a new mobo but it comes with a passive NorthBridge cooler and I want to do some serious overclocking.

I have a bunch of old Slot 1 CPU coolers including a TT Golden Orb.

I was thinking I could do some metal work and trim off the big flat peices and drill mounting holes and presto, a great NB cooler.

The Dragon Orb keeps my P3 500 @600 at 42c under load (about 40W). Do you think it would be good enough for the NB???

Boy, that would be sweet. And yes that would work like a charm, todays active NB coolers are a small dinkey fan that hardly do crap. That would work great over that passive cooler. I want to see some pics when its done

ahh that would take the fun out of altering a cpu cooler. I thought about doing that with a coolermaster areo 4 lite and my mobo, but it was too heavy to be supported by the mobo

If you like modding, get one of these small coolers and alter that to fit your NB

why not get the Zalman ZM-NB47J? .. it's a great passive heatsink and will do just fine for any serious overclocking as long as your casecooling is ok... if it's not enough, put a 12cm fan blowing on it :P ..

i think i have to agree with bigval on this one. i bought a better hsf for my northbridge and it dropped the temps by a big bit. But when i turned the fan off there was no change in northbridge temps. Kinda wierd. i do think you could gain from a better heatsink though. and if designed preperly maybe the fan would do something. i think its because there is pretty hot stuff all around the northbridge so it cant get cold air. though it is out of a case, so maybe if i hit it with a nother fan to clear the heat pockets out it would get cooler.
