try placing a piece of cardboard or something between the psu and cpu as like a wall and then listen.

The correct answer is...the CPU HS/F. Why? Because I swapped out the stock non-name PSU with my 2.5 year old Antec TruePower 380 (which has only been out of service for a few weeks since I got my Antec 550), and the 380 caught fire. I have no clue what happened. It also blew the battery in a UPS, though not in the UPS that it was actually connected to. I haven't yet reconnected the stock PSU to see what, if anything, is fried in the rig. Darn you guys for not voting more for the CPU fix.

Woohoo, got a POST beep on the floor with the old PSU. Now I just need to hook it back up to everything else.

I'm through fiddling with this one for a bit. That was a good enough scare for one night. I actually saw flames through the back of the Antec 380. The PC is back up and running, though, and seems to be fine (it's back to folding already). I'm not quite sure what happened at all. I used that PSU with the same mobo/CPU/etc for over 2 years without a hitch. I then used the PSU for a few weeks on my new rig until the bigger and better Antec arrived. Since then, it's been sitting by my desk (like 2-3 weeks). After I popped the UPS, I disconnected and reconnected all of the internal power cables. When I hit the switch again, poof. It's a shame because that was a really nice PSU and more than enough to OC a 2.4 Northy and 9700 Pro. I guess I'll just have to deal with stock or low OC speeds as it's not worth the cash to get a better PSU for a secondary rig.

The worst part of it is that when the both of the UPS units popped, my main rig (that I'm on now) shut off, losing a killer WU that was pretty far along. Grrr. The one it started now appears to be pretty weak (100 second frames x 1000). Oh well, it's all for a good cause.

On the bright side, I get to dissect a PSU when I have the time. Hopefully I won't shock myself too badly.

Edit: Nifty, Antec has a 3 year warranty. I put in for an RMA number.

Dang, I wanted to vote for both, since they both gotta go for a good OC. But i did vote for the PSU, since thats the roots for a good OC.
