Every nice job with the lapping.

yeah ... I loved that motherboard, a total tank! (done in by a bios flash no less!)
With my old E6400, I ran daily at 500x7 ... Here's an old CPUZ screeny: ... P5B Dlx @ 500x7: ![]() ... Great great board. Anyway, the upside is that I should still be able to RMA it for a new board which I can then sell (for dirt cheap!) to help recoup some of my losses. Not sure what the Asus warranty is though ... ...

I had the same exact problem happen to my old Asus A8R-MVP (bad bios flash using the ****ty quick flash thing). If I remember correctly, I'm almost positive I just called them up, told them what happened, and they sent me a new bios chip. I was going on vacation the next week so when I got back, my new chip was right there in the mail. I would try to do that before just RMAing it.

I was going to object until you said you were lapping your CPU as well. Thermalright claims they make their heat sink bases convex to better fit with the CPUs, so if this is true then you could have made things worse by lapping it depending upon the severity of your CPU's concavity.
I applaud your perseverance and look forward to more updates after the motherboard RMA and you get reasonable temps!

Very nice job with the lap, pics, and descriptive time line.
I currently have a pc-kits lap kit ready to lap whatever I get, whenever I get around to doing it. I'm debating between the TRUE or the new noctua hsf. +1 for your effort.

More Prelimary Temps:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- So in a madly obsessive compulsive type way ... I lapped my horribly concave Q6600 today. I didn't take pics but MAN was it concave! I started with something crazy like 120grit and had it flat in about an hour; I then went up through 320, 420, 600 and 1000. ... Anyway ... I also took the P5E3 back in exchange for a Maximus Formula since I wanted to keep using my nice Mushkin D9 DDR2 ... I know nothing about this motherboard, just that it's reported to be a decent clocker and so I just used some basic settings to get a 3.6ghz overclock that would post. Here's some screenies of the temps and general CPUZ settings. Mind you ... I've got a month or so of learning this MB before setting anything in stone. This is in a 22C room BTW: ... ![]() ... QUESTION: Can the latest version of CPUZ be trusted in regards to voltage reporting? I've set the BIOS at 1.5v and if droop is a factor for this board, then the reported 1.488 is probably right. I have no idea if this is Prime95 stable or not ... I doubt it is. I also don't know how good those temps are for a Q6600 at 3.6ghz but considering the highest core is only 10 over ambient or so ... I figure that's about in line with what I can expect from the T.R.U.E. I'll post some load temps later this week after I start stability testing. If anyone has any tips on the Maximus Formula board, please chime in ...
