Let me preface this little picto-log by saying that I've lapped heat sinks and CPU's many times.
I've lapped Zalman's, Scythe's, Core 2 Duos and even a Dual core (820D) a while back. I always get them perfectly flat and every job typically takes about two hours. But man did I get more than I bargained for with my new Thermaltake Ultra 120 Extreme! I had no idea when starting the lap process this morning (while working), that I'd be spending nearly 5 hours today getting that bastardo flat! That said ... here goes... ... S1rrah's Ultra 120 Extreme Lapping "Picto-Log"(tm) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So I get started while working my weekend job; yes, I've got lots of free time there. I tape my first sheet of 320 grit to the glass and take a moment to gaze on the loveliness of what Thermalright has created:![]() ... First, some preliminary tests to conduct ... ![]() ... ![]() After about 45 minutes, I marker check again... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Still very convex, even after 45 minutes at 320... ![]() Nose to the grindstone, I keep at it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There's nothing quite so lovely ('cept maybe napalm in the morning) as copper dust suspended in soapy water! ![]() ... ![]() I complete 2 hours total at work then have to continue once back at home... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ![]() ... ![]() Finishing touches... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At this point my eyes are blurring and my right arm has grown far more muscular than my left. Also, I've quite neatly sanded the tip of my index finger down to the flesh ... I didn't even know I was doing that. ![]() ![]() ... ![]() ... ![]() ... Far and away, the most grueling lap job I've ever completed. I can't tell you how many times, about half way through, I wanted to just accept it as 'almost flat,' or 'nearly flat enough,' or some such excuse for having to continue. But at a point I sort of went into this Zen like state, my awareness of my surroundings gradually diminished, sounds receded into silence and towards the end, all I knew was the steady "swish, swish" of the heat sink over the sandpaper and the ever flattening base staring up at me after each consecutive marker test. ![]() Well worth it. I hope it suits my new Q6600 well. BTW ... The sandpapers used are as such: 3 hours @ 320 grit 15 mins @ 600 grit 15 mins @ 1000 grit 15 mins @ 3000 liquid compound ... Any other T.R.U.E lappers out there have as much fun as I did?

http://www.easypckits.com/products/hslk/ You can order the same set with glass, but I'm sure you have something flat at home.
