Default how hot is too hot?

hi all im new to this forum and to overclocking, ive been into computers for pretty much my whole life. my sys info i listed below. i was just wondering how hot the cpu should be allowed to get? im currently running just a slight overclock and my idle temp is 46-47c , i have an aftermarket copper heat and 80 mm fan and one case fan. is it safe to proceed to higher v-core voltages or is my heatsink not good enough

cpu amd 2700+ thoroughbred(2.17ghz)
FSB 333
MB Asus A7n8x-e deluxe

current overclock:
FSB 370
cpu 2.22
multi 12* 185mhz bus speed

thanks for any help, great forum!

Chris

Welcome to the Forum Chris!

Your idle temps seem a bit high for any further overclocking

OC'rs try to maintain a 55 degree LOAD temp as standard for AMD's.

You may want to consider and upgrade in heatsink and fan, Thermaltake and Thermalright being some of the heavy hitters when it comes to advanced air cooling.

Try monitoring your CPU load temp and let us know what the max is, this will let us, and you, know if any more can be squeezed out of your current set-up.

Thanks for the quick reply! i think i will end up need to upgrade...but anyway
how would i go about checking the load temp? should i run a high usage program and then check the temp or is thier a benchmark tool i need.
i currently have sisoftwares sandra , and PCmark. would either of these do the trick?

thanks again
Chris

Run an arithmetic benchmark in Sandra, and monitor your cpu temp using an OEM software, or downloading MBM 5. (scroll down to choose download location)

If you want the best load temp scenario, download Prime95 and run that, while checking temps. (Prime95 will also test the overrall stability of your overclock!)

Agreed a good heatsink is no good without a proper contact method, Antec also do a good alternative for your paste needs.

I would say 60c is an absolute Maximum, setting up an Alarm within Asus Probe, then set up a record and run a good benchmark, if you play games like i do, i use;

3DMark2001SE
3DMark2003 (340)
PCMark02
SiSoft Sandra 2004
AquaMark03
Doom3
Quake3
X2-The Threat

Use all or just a few of these can stress test GPU & CPU and let you know where your system is peaking temperature wise, also remember its not only CPU's that give out heat !

To Stress test the whole system I run a botmatch on UT2004 with a fairlly good map rotation with 32 godlike bots to put the most strain on the cpu and graphics card at the same time
