Default Varying Temps

I just recently downloaded Everest and SpeedFan to monitor my temps because I had a feeling my CPU was running too hot. Checking temps after my computer had been on for 10mins Everest and SpeedFan were both reading CPU: 71C, Core 1: 56C, Core 2: 55C, MCP: 60C. I then restarted the computer and checked what the BIOS which read CPU Temp: 66C. Checked SpeedFan and Everest again and they were still about 5 degrees warmer. So my question is which is the more accurate reading? Also, I know these temps are really high. The AMD site states that 55-70C is the max temp for my CPU. What do I do???? Please help! wow everest and speedfan are reading 75C right now. I really hope they are wrong. Ok im gonna shut my computer down now. Thanks for any advice.

Well first off, welcome to OCN, i'll bet we can help you out.

so... are the temps that you're talking about Load or idle? because either way they are hot, but if those are idle temps then you've got a big problem. For now i'll assume that they're load temps.

The reason that speedfan and everest say that the temps are different than bios, is because bios doesn't count as idle temps, or as load temps. Bios is generally a 80% load on your system. But 66c at 80% load is WAY high.

Try re-seating the Heatsink... did you use thermal paste? I have the same chip as you, and still have stock cooling as well, but my load temps are 50c (ambient is 24c). so its possible that you somehow don't have thermal paste on it. While you're at it, check what voltage your CPU is running on, because that will make a difference in temperature(its called vcore in bios, and stock is 1.35v).

Last i'd say check your case fans (try taking off the side of the case and putting a box fan next to it, if that lowers your temps drastically , then you need better case cooling), and also make sure that the CPU fan is connected to the motherboard right.

System: Waiting for custom case to finish.

Thanks for the response logan. Unfortunately, the temps are idle temps. I'm assuming load temps are taken when running orthos? My friend built me this computer and im not sure if he used thermal paste, ill check with him. I took the side of the case off and have a box fan blowing towards it about 8ft away and now speedfan is reading about 65C.

Here are some voltages I read: CPU:1.21V, NB:1.20V, HT: 1.16V

Do you think an aftermarket CPU cooler would be my best bet? Also, do you think my 350W power supply could be a cause for the high temps? 350W seems alittle low for my system. Could the power supply be overworking? I know my video card requires a minimum of 400W.

when using a stock heatsink it comes with thermal paste preapplied. I would take off the heatsink and remount it with some Artic silver 5, also make sure the fan is working properly.

The stock heatsink does come with thermal paste pre-applied, but you need to re-apply it each time you reseat your heatsink, so its possible that your friend forgot to reapply more paste if he's ever had the heatsink off.

An aftermarket cooler would definitely help out, but right now your temps are so far off that something is pretty messed up... you should see about a 30c drop in idle temps when everything is just right. For now, I'd try reseating ... before you apply more thermal paste make sure you clean all of the old gunk off the bottom of the heatsink and the top of the CPU with some isopropyl alcohol and some Q-tips.

Your PSU, while it might be overheating due to the load placed on it, shouldn't make your processor hot. If the PSU overheats it shuts down, and your computer will turn off at random. So while that might be affecting your case temp and stability, it shouldn't affect your CPU temp.

EDIT:
oh and yes, load temps would be measured when using a program like orthos, or prime 95. Idle is when the computer is just sitting there doing nothing.

ok well i think im going to order a cpu cooler and some artic silver 5. Can anyone recommend a good cooler for my cpu? I know a lot of them are made for the looks but im looking for quality.

Last night I ran an orthos blend test to see how much the temps would change. After about an hour of 100% load the temps changed 0c! CPU temp started at about 65C (w/ the side of my case off and a box fan blowing) and measured a consistent 65C for the entire hour.

Does this make you wonder if it is a software issue? I touched the base of the cooling fins while under full load and it felt cooler than 65C. Think it might be windows? I was recommended by my friend to boot Knoppix Linux from a CD and then check the temp in the BIOS. If the temp is much lower then it is probably windows.

It sounds like the problem is that the temps are being reported wrong... to have your temps move 0c after being loaded for an hour would be great. It could just be misslabled in the programs that you were using. Try loading it again, and keep an eye on the temps. the temp that spikes like 20c is your CPU temp. The 65c might be the northbridge or something like that.

As far as coolers go, it really comes down to how much you want to spend, and what will fit in your case. This review covers the best air coolers out there, and the next one compares some more of them.

There are a ton out there, but these are the ones that people around here talk about the most. If your budget is tighter there are the artic cooling freezer pro, and the OCZ vanqisher as well.

It has been a few weeks and I am continuing to search for the problem when I have the time. In the past few weeks I have done the following:

1) Bought compressed air and sprayed it on the fan and cooling fins of the cpu cooler.
2) Removed the stock cpu cooler; cleaned the surface of the fins and chip, then applied AS5.
3) Uninstalled Everest and SpeedFan then reinstalled only SpeedFan which gave no change.
4) Ran Linux Knoppix from a CD to determine if it was a software issue. (I let the computer idle in Linux for about 20mins then restarted and checked the temp in the bios which didn’t change)
5) I used a noncontact thermometer gun at the base of the cooling fins of the cpu cooler and northbridge. It read 110F(43C) at the base of the cpu cooler and 126F(52C) for the northbridge.

As of right now when I let my computer idle with the side of the case off and a large box fan blowing towards it, SpeedFan reads 62C for TEMP1 and 46C for CORE. If I were to restart and idle in BIOS the cpu temp would read about 58C.

So this is what it comes down to when idle:
SpeedFan TEMP1: 62C
SpeedFan CORE: 46C
BIOS cpu temp: 58C
Thermometer gun on cpu fins: 43C
Thermometer gun on northbridge: 52C

Also I know this has to be important, after running a 100% cpu stress test for 7 hours using orthos I found no change in any temps! When I am idling my cpu reads no more than 8%. What is the deal?? Thanks again.

It is a bit warm in the Happy Valley right now. Your ambient (room) temps are part of the problem, most likely.

I'd recommend dropping $20-$40 if you can swing it on a new cooler.

G'luck.

My friend has the same problem with temp reporting... for some reason he can't get any reasonable CPU temp out of his 5000 BE. He also noticed how even after loading the CPU, that none of the temps even moved. Unfortunately, we haven't figured out how to fix this yet. I hear the Brisbanes are notorious for unreliable temp reporting... and I dont think I've ever heard how to fix it. Maybe someone with more knowledge than I have will enlighten us.

I would say that it seems like speedfan and the temp observed with the temp gun are fairly accurate, even if they are really high, and that the BIOS confirms this (BIOS counts as about an 80% load for the CPU)... so if you do the math, that means that you might be hitting around 70c under load, which is really high. The strange part is that the temps dont move under load.

If you really are hitting 70c on load, then you should invest in a better cooler.

System: Waiting for custom case to finish.
