Default TRUE and Temps...

Hi!

I've just bought Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme (I believe it's called TRUE, isn't it?) and put it onto my e4300. After reading all those enthusiastic reviews I was expecting it to cool down my proc.

Well, it didn't. It has a 12cm PWM fan on it, it's in Cooler Master CM 690 case with all possible fans installed, I used Arctic Silver Ceramique and I'm sure I've applied it correctly (tried line method and spread method, same results)... Still, if running at stock, I get 42°C idle and ~62°C stress (readings from CoreTemp, Everest and TaT show similar temperatures). Temperature in my room is about 23°C. I'm getting desperate - I just spent a lot of money and result are not much better than on Arctic Cooling Freezer... What could I do? I've read about lapping, but I'm a bit too lazy to do that... Anyway, the tests found in the net suggested that temps should be much lower without lapping (I've expected ~35°C idle and ~45°C stress).

Please, suggest something.

What fans did you install ON the TRUE. Some benchers use like 3000rpm 120mm fans in a dual push-pull setup.

Or did you forget to put a fan on?

Or is your fan a quiet and low speed 1200rpm 120mm fan?

Hope I help.

i would reseat it with AS5. i heard that ceramique is for use for lower temp applications like wc. also do you have good airflow in your case?

Any real TRUE enthusiast will tell you that the only way to get your money's worth out of the TRUE and see real results is by lapping. It sucks, but it's true. You would definitely see better results with a good lap job. If you really insist on not lapping, you might want to go with the Xigmatek or something.

Lapping it is the only way

What fan do you have on it. You need a high cfm fan to see really good results.

Ive heard this before and usually the culprit is accidently having the fan blow the wrong way. make sure it is blowing in the right direction. I admit, i did the same thing and was getting 70c with my tuniq. I turned the fan the right direction and it dropped 20c.

@dasparx:
Yes, i believe it is mounted properly: how should I make sure? It is in it's place and seems solid, screws are driven as far as possible. TIM is Arctic Cooling Ceramique, as I've written previously. Yes, it's pointing towars rear exhaust fan and there are two more on top of the case. I can't make pictures since I don't have a camera and my phone does crappy pictures, but in like two days I'll be moving home for summer holidays and I can make pictures then, if the problem persists...

@vinodfrndz:
I've done it twice already...

@Danylu:
I've put this on:
http://www.arctic-cooling.com/fans2.php?idx=108
I know it isn't the very good one, but still it makes quite a good amount of wind through the TRUE and it's PWM controlled, which I like.

@everyone:
Thanks for quick response. I just opened my case and put a hand into it... There's quite a lot of air movement around the TRUE, and it isn't very hot.
Temps in my room are very high, I know. In the evening it should cool down, but I don't think that the processor temp will fall more than 2°C.
And one more thing... I've noticed with both AC Freezer and the TRUE, that after putting processor into stress the temps rise very quickly - it's like 2-3 seconds from 45 to over 60! Is it normal? I would rather expect them to rise slowly, degree after degree.

Of course I can re-mount the TRUE, but I want to have at least directions what to do to make it better. Any other advice?

edit:
oh crap! I just brought a termomether into my room and there isn't 23°C It's almost 30! Well, I guess I just wait for the night, open all windows and check then, since I don't have A/C (in Poland it's still kinda expensive and we don't often have such weather)

Well... I've lapped both IHS and TRUE so now they're both mirror-like and I've put some better thermal grease on (Zalman ZM-STG1), made it more stable and push harder by putting a metal pad between that "thing" with bolt-holes and the radiator, installed second fan on the TRUE, set all fans to maximum speed, waited for my room temperature to drop down to 22°C and fired it up.

Guess what?
NOTHING changed. Not even a single degree. Still, the TRUE is just warm after an hour of running Orthos, while it should become hot.

Of course, the thermal paste hasn't yet got to maximum performance (will take about a week), but c'mon, I was expecting at least 10°C less.

What else could I do?
