Works like a magic trick.

Also note in the photos ... I combined the washer mod with the bolt through mod so as to keep the metal brackets from touching the motherboard once torqued down.

I couldn't stand the fact that my TRUE spun around so easy ... the bolt through mod totally eliminated any spin action.

Gonna have to break it all down today as I'm going to lap my Q6700.

Should be fun.

did you have to drill additional holes in the mounting plate???

Hey s1rrah, you mind posting a source link to that entire process? Thanks.

I did the washer mod with mine, but it's still twisting around more than I like. And I'm at 33c STOCK!! And everything's lapped! So I need to do the bolt through. Although I've never seen it first secured with nuts at the bottom to keep it in place. That's an awesome idea. That's definitely worth a Rep!

Which screws are you using? The long ones or short ones? There must be something wrong with they mounting, maybe too much paste.

Yeah, I thought about too much paste, I might try to redo with less. And to answer your question about the screws, I honestly can't remember. I think I went with the ones the manual said were for 775 sockets. Which ones do I want to be using?

As a second thought, though: I really like the idea of being able to remove my TRUE without the bracket underneath the MB getting all out of place. That's probably my one biggest complaint about this whole process. But with the bolt through along with a few nuts right at the base, the screws are always right there. It's so hard to plug in the CPU power on the board as well as put in that corner screw with the TRUE installed. It would be so much easier to put the board in the case, and THEN screw in the TRUE.

Yathink?

EDIT: mine was a swine to fit too. I have some nice thermalright fin cuts on my thumbs too. What worries me more is that the TRUE was sliding around like mad and in the arctic silver 5 guide it says try not to move it more than 1-2 degrees clockwise / anti-clockwise. Will this have a massive effect? The TRUE never lost contact with the CPU at any point. I just wanted it to be nice and neat :-(
You place it between the top bracket that you screw in and the top of the base of the heatsink. A quick search on OCN should reveal some useful mod guides. What kind of problems were you having fitting it? I found the mounting system one of the easiest to use.

It's optimal to mount the heatsink perfectly and then secure it without moving, but that never happens. It's ok for it to move around a little when you're securing it. As long as it doens't lose contact (ie. you lift it off the cpu) you should be fine. Before the washer mod, I re-adjusted mine a few times after mounting it to get it to fit properly in my case (and sometimes by accidently bumping it a few degrees when installing over components. Didn't affect my temps at all. Nothing to worry about.

It could be too much paste. Especially if both the cpu and heatsink are lapped. Just a tiny dot should do since there's less gaps due to everything being flat. What are your load temps and voltage? When I did all the mods, my idle temps didn't change much, maybe ~2-3c. Load temps improved greatly though.
