Just thought of it why not have someone ship you a TRUE to save some money? I guess you'd rather wind up with a TRUE in the end but shipping isnt a lot in the US so maybe think of that.
If the Noctua was designed for Noctua fans, and the TRUE for high CFM fans, then why does the Noctua perform better with high CFM fans? And unlapped vs unlapped is plenty fair. The Noctua has a flat base from the start, and if the TRUE doesn't that's its fault. Not only that, not everyone has the time to lap their heatsink or even wants to. It should be perfect out of the box.

I still disagree. I think lapping the TRUE would be changing the way the coolers were made in the TRUE's favour.

One of the reasons the Noctua is better is because it comes with a better base finish. So if we lap the TRUE, we're not taking that into account. We're basically taking away a defect (i use that term loosely) in the TRUE. This goes as well for saying I will need to do a pressure mod on it to ensure it performs at its best...but the noctua has no need for a pressure mount. I guess I'd have to add 2 heatpipes to the Noctua to make it fair? See where I'm going with it...

And I'm going to test the coolers with a 50cfm fan, and a 90cfm fan so we get to see how they compare using different fan setups.

I'm not a fanboy because I want a fair comparison. I'm not surprised a Noctua owner would make a comparison biased. I mean come on: unlapped AND with a low cfm fan. There's no point ordering it to compare. Everyone who vuys a TRUE does so to lap it and achieve the best performance possible. If not , all they have to do is buy a Xigmatek.

You can't add heatsinks to the Noctua but you CAN lap a TRUE, so that's an advantage if you will. I understand if you want to make the Noctua win because you prefer it but if you don't lap it it's not a fair comparison. To make it fair lap both. The reason you wouldnt want to is because the Noctua gets less of a performance boost, which is fine. I'm just saying everyone laps TRUE's and comparing it unlapped and with a low-cfm fan is pretty much a rigged comparison. I'm not a fanboy and I'm actually interested in buying the Noctua. I realize it's easy to label someone as a 'TRUE fanboy' but I'm not telling you to lap it olone, washer-mod it, bolt-mod it, Enzo-mod it, then put a 220cfm Delta on it.

Are you reading what I'm writing? I'm getting frustrated having to repeat myself.

I'm going to run with a 50cfm AND a 90cfm fan. So theres the high CFM you wanted.

But I'm NOT going to lap it. Sorry. You're calling me biased but really think about what you're asking me to do. You're saying the TRUE has a bad base and the Noctua has a good one right? So lets lap them both so now the TRUE is no longer lacking vs. the noctua. I'm not going to explain it anymore. I'm running them stock vs stock, it doesn't get any more fair than that!

1. Which model fan is the 90cfm?

2. When you buy a TRUE you can lap it and lose some degrees, whereas the Noctua you can't. It is a defect to have a bad base, yes, but that means there's more room for performance boosts. Some people have as much as 10C off and you won't be showing that. It makes the comparison useless, so why bother. I certainly won't be looking for the results compared to a cooler that isn't like mine for 99% of TRUE owners.

Since you added 'stock-for-stock' in your edit, why not have no fan on the TRUE as well. Even more fair! You see how ridiculous it gets. Do the comparison however you want, but once your done lap the TRUE and compare again. I'm starting to think you WANT the Noctua to win.

by the sounds of it, you want him to lap the true, and put a high cfm fan on it, BUT only want a noctua fan on the noctua,
you cant compare 2 things using different parts

kopi said hes going to use a high cfm fan on both, and a noctua fan on both

Actually I don't. Reread more slowly (in a friendly way because there's no other way to say it)

Quote me saying I want him to use high cfm on TRUE and low cfm on Noctua.

He can have the rigged comparison he wants, but afterwards compare both lapped and both with a 38mm-thick high cfm fan (in which the Noctua apperantly performs better than a TRUE).

QFT thanks skullz.

Adrien you're making a really big deal out of this. Having a cooler pre-lapped is an advantage that the Noctua has from STOCK, and it shouldn't be stripped of that.

The fan is a Yate Loon D12SH..I have 2 of them. A fan is not a modification, but you're right. I should do passive tests on both of them for the hell of it.

Guys,

Lets keep this a civilized discussion. These are Kopi's test/results and whether or not you choose to agree with the way they were conducted is completely up to you. If you would want to see something else added to the mix (lapping, replace fans, etc..) or something done differently then please ask him politely and respect his final decision.

IMHO, the TRUE is flawed. Both the Ultra 120 and the TRUE were warped, the TRUE was very badly warped and effected the temps by 5c. I inspected it and found it to be very much bowed. I had to flatten it with a machinest stone first, then 320g emery and spent a great deal of time on it.
I guess my point is, what if the tested TRUE was shipped flat as it was ment to be, or it was warped. What if the competing HS was warped lie the TRUE because there popularity increased and the production became flawed like the TRUE.

So, IMHO, any results would be skewed regardless. The only reasonable factor would be to test with the TRUE unlapped and lapped to focus on the variant. And as stated with the various types of fans in each surface condition.
