HACK THE PLANET!

For whatever reason, Thermalright designed the base of the HR05-IFX not to be completely flat. There is a 20x30mm center block that is nickel-coated copper. This area is raised while the rest of the base is aluminum and slightly recessed. The total base area is 30x30mm. Unfortunately, the Intel ICH9R is around 25x25mm. That means a portion of the Southbridge wouldn't contact the HS. I just spent the last 3 hours lapping with 80 grit sandpaper to even out the bottom. Removing 1-2mm is easier than it sounds. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!
Stock base.... noticed the raised area (mine was slightly even higher) ![]() 3 hours later.... ![]() Another angle: ![]() Mounted:

I know....
![]() I would have gotten that instead... but I had my IFX version since I was previously using it on a P35. That's why I don't understand why Thermalright did this. The base was just a few mm short of coverage.

Doesn't the ICH9R chip have a heatspreader on it?

Nope.... it is just a huge die. The only chipsets that have IHS are X38/x48 and a few server chipsets (to my knowledge).

Why are you throwing that monstrosity on it?
Even with little airflow, I threw a 1cm tall heatsink on mine, and it keeps it around 45 C under full load; heck I have heard of one or two accounts of people running it with no heatsink, and in open air on a test bench with no special cooling, it was better than with the stock heatsink (courtesy of a toast NB and heatpiping). It looks kind of like this Enzotech 'sink, only black alumimium and stuck on with thermal tape. Is that a PCI-E 1x gigabyte NIC next to the IFX? May I ask what it is for? (I have a few of those kicking around, and need a good use for them).

I had a spare IFX heatsink and it fits so perfectly. I hate thermal tape... I just don't trust. I've had a few bad experiences with it falling so I like to hard-mount everything. I got a freebie Thermaltake Spirit RAMsink... so I put it on 256MB ECC DDR2 as well. Overkill... very... ![]() Yeah, that's an Intel Pro/1000 PT NIC.... I had it lying around. It has a few additional features that the onboard didn't and better settings options. One cool thing about it is it can scan the cable line and tell you signal quality. It can even tell WHERE your cable has damage or interference.

What sort of temps are you getting with the IFX?
you wouldn't happen to have any pictures of the rest of the computer would you? I am getting the urge to water cool my NB and GPU, and was curious how you handled cooling everything.

I don't see what the big deal is. You do not need to cover 100% of the plastic packaging of the SB to get more than adequate cooling. The actual die is a good bit smaller than the black packaging.
__________________If I had lapped my HR-05/IFX flat as you did, I'm not certain it would have made proper contact with my NB (were cooling is far more crucial). The foam shim can be compressed a lot, but I think would still have added enough thickness on top of the surface mount caps/resistors on the P35 substrate to reduce overall mounting pressure a great deal. The HR-05 is total overkill on a southbridge anyway.

Yes, the HR-05 is overkill... but I had it lying around and need to cool my SB. My case has very little airflow. My upper chamber has four 120mm fans at 800RPM. I am using WC to transport my Q6600, X38, and G92 heat away to a different chamber. However, the hard drives, VRM, GDDR, RAID card, SB, and X-Fi do put out enough heat to warm the case.
