Rule of thumb is in the front and sides and out the rear and top. Now, you can do whatever you want as longs as you are moving air through the case. Generally, you want more CFM out than in, but as long as it is close, you should be OK. More is not always better. you can have conflicting air currents and such that actually inhibit airflow.

I have a feeling not many people have tested this and are jumping on the conventional wisdom bandwagon. I would test it out. Second I am apprehensive about OCN posters sometimes, I asked a question about my graphics card and four people asked if I have crossfire enabled so... If it were me I would take the time and test it out. I would want to 'feed' air from the front to the graphic cards and pull air away from the side so it doesnt rise into the cpu.

can't really say much to this without the whole story, so, just gonna skip over it.

maybe i guess. 9 times out of 10 you will be better served with a side fan as intake, feeding cool air directly (shortest distance) to the GPU. the air has a good distance to travel from the front of the case to the GPU. furthermore with the large top fan and two 120mm fans on the back as exhaust, that warm air coming from the GPU is going to get pushed out just fine. especially if he has another 120mm fan feeding air directly to his CPU fan, and the CPU fan feeding directly to an exhaust fan. that's a pretty steady stream of air and probably not going to get influenced heavily by some simple warm air convection.

EDIT: run-on sentence, yay.

Well, not sure what the issue is as crossifre is directly related to graphics cards, so I guess it all depends on the specifics.

As to the second part, hot air will rise, but not when you have a few 120mm fans blowing in etc. The point of a side fan is to either coold CPU (older ones, anyways) or GFX card. The most effective way to do this is to have cool air from outside the case blow directly onto the heatsink of the card. Since the air is somewhat heated from the front (passing over hdd's, RAM etc.) the only way to go is in form the side.

While I agree each set-up is different and if the OP genuinely wants to see what works best, he should test it out, but I do not think OCN is a poor place for advice. I consider my self fairly knowlegable, but this is the first place I go to when I need help figuring something out or needing advice. Now, there is good information and bad information. it is up to the OP to weed through it.

Many of the conventions are out the window anyways with a case like the Antec 1200. it has so many fans and spots for fans, you could pretty mucy choose which way the airflow went and still have good cooling. When you are talking about 6 or more 120mm fans, you can pretty much dictate the direction you want the air to go. The real obstacle is not confliction flow paterns etc.

that I agree with. With that many fans you can make the air do what you want. My palit cards are double slot, and they pull air from the back and from the end of the card facing the front of the case. The exit ,like most graphic cards, is at the bottom so it would make sense to remove that air through a side fan.
