Default Xigmatek HDT-S1283 - High Temps

So right now on my G0 stepping Q6600 @ 2.4 Ghz (not even OC'd) my idle temps are 39-36-33-36c and at 100% load Small ttf's with prime95 they hover around 63-63-61-61. I'm using Artic MX-2. Based on everything I have been reading, these temps are really high. Could too much thermal paste be the problem? Also, is there any specific direction the fan should be facing? I'm assuming towards the rear of the case, pushing all the air out.

Also, Antec 900 with all fans on high, room temp is about 70.

too much TIM can be a problem.. you can try remounting it if you'd like... I remember there is a specific way to apply TIM to Xigmatek Rifle coolers... you should look that up

also, are you using the push pins? if you can, try buying the bolt-through kit from xigmatek, and watch those temps decrease... push pins don't apply enough pressure to fully dissapate heat

Re-apply tim and spread a nice even coat over the CPU then re-mount then see how the temps go, if its still kinda of a prob if they lower just a little bit then get the bolt-thru kit

Saber, should I put any on the processor as well? And just plop it down according to that picture, or spread it first?

I just remounted using much less thermal paste then before and it kind of sucks because at 100% two cores are at 62-63 while the other two are at 51.

I ordered the bolt kit this morning from newegg, hopefully it will be here by the middle of this week. I'm just gonna suck it up until then because I've already remounted twice today and having to take out the motherboard every time is frustrating. If it doesn't improve to about 50C @ 100% @ 2.4, I'm just gonna lap the cpu and hsf..

with such a large delta between cores, that means that the paste hasn't been spread evenly... apply it only on the heatsink, and allow the weight of the heatsink to spread it evenly...

btw, you may not want to lap your heatsink... rifle coolers don't have a very thick base due to the heatpipes, and if you overlap even slightly, it will cause damage to the heatpipes, and you'll have nothing to cool your CPU...

if you want to lap your heatsink, do so with sandpaper with grits higher than 800... just some light sanding...

Well the Xigmatek has never really been good for quads. It's a good value cooler but just because of it's value a lot of people have been saying it can easily push a quad to 3.6ghz. The Vendetta 2 is the HDT cooler for quads. Around 60C is normal if you have bad airflow or room temp possibly over 70. With a TRUE/Kaze I load at 45. With a worse fan, maybe 50, and the difference between it and the Xigmatek can be 10C on a quad.
