It's only logical that the computer temps is dependent on ambient temperarature. The greater the difference between the components temp and the air temp, the more heat will be exchanged.

This is wrong. You are not taking into account the rate of change of the rate of change of the exchange of temperature. Let's say you have a glass of water at 10C, and one at 20C. The intial rate of change of the second glass will be greater, therefore It will take less time for the second glass to get from 20C to 10C than for the first to get from 10C to 0C, but both of them will take the exact same time to get from 10C to 0C. However, by the time the second glass get to 10C, the first one will be below 10C already.

What makes hot water pipes burst is that hot water is supercooled, then it freezes all at once, making the pipe burst. Hot water will supercool but not cold water, because the foreign particles in hot water are broken down by the heat, making it harder for ice crystals to form. The cold water pipes will freeze sooner, but they will do so gradually, blocking the pipe, but not bursting it.

Wow I read this topic thinking "cool a discussion I enjoy!", only to see it's a 3 year old topic. -_-

But anywho, since it was bumped up, I think I should be happy that my ambient to CPU idle temps are only 1-2C difference. Right now in winter time our house stays right around 70F throughout the day and CoreTemp reads my CPU anywhere from 73-82F. And what I found interesting is when I installed my 8800 GT last week, I had the side panel off for a few hours as I was testing it and doing benchies and the CPU was idling below ambients which I found surprising.

why not make a temp index, call it... core load - room ambient = ocntempindex. or OTI. so for me 59c - 24c = 35 OTI. A basic variance integer between off (room ambient) and on (core load) temps?

Ambients don't really matter because you should be going off of the temp difference(load-idle) to know if you have your cooler mounted correctly compared to others with the same/similar set-up..

Edit: Ambients will always change but the temp difference of using a specific cooler should always be almost the same. Ex If someone has 20 idle and 40 load with a tuniq and I have 30 idle and 50 load with a tuniq both on a q6600 go, then we both have it mounted right/the same and you would know nothing is wrong. The ambient temp itself doesn't factor into it.

this is why i put my reserator in my bathroom (nextdoor) which is very cold because of the round hole in the wall. it really does affect cooling temperatures more than i imagined

Wow this kinda of confused me. ( that happens alot) If I am reading this correctly, in theory it is ok to have above 55c for your temp on your CPU if your ambient is high enough? My understanding was it is always bad to go above that, but I fully understand the concept that your CPU cooler can't cool below ambient, and the hotter your room is the hotter your computer will be
