My understanding was it is always bad to go above that, but I fully understand the concept that your CPU cooler can't cool below ambient, and the hotter your room is the hotter your computer will be
The thermal limit for a CPU is a physical property of that CPU and is not dependent on the ambient temp. For example, if the manufacturer states that a given CPU is good up to 73°C, the CPU doesn't care if you keep your house freezing or if you live in the middle of the desert in the summer.

The point of this thread is that you can't judge the cooling performance of a heatsink or other cooling device without knowing both the load and ambient temps. A lot of people used to post things like "your HSF isn't working at all, reseat/replace/whatever" because of high load temps. When the ambient temp was also considered, the difference between the two gave a realistic assessment of performance. As you can see, this thread is quite old, and this concept is much better understood than it was when the thread was originally posted.

i was considering putting it in a freezer, i have a spare chest freezer.

the only problem is the water might freeze, but maybe i can solve this with a higher overclock to thaw it!

why? i would only put the reserator in the fridge, and leave all the fans in it.

anyway it doesnt matter now because i pointed my air purifier at it before i went out, came back and it was cold even though its folding.

a) The rate at which heat is produced is many times greater than the rate at which the fridge can remove it.
b) The compressor is not designed for 24/7 use.

yeah leeds! think there are 3 of us now, we're taking over.

i wouldn't go by any software to tell you ambient temps, once speedfan thought my ambient temp was 120 degrees, i just have a thermometer clock beside me anyway.

and i haven't got a clue which one of those shows the ambient temp :s
