If something could beat the TRUE on an i7, it would beat it on the Core 2 as well - and already be established. So unless it just happens to be released at the same time as the i7, it's not likely..

Could get the Noctua NH-U12P SE1366. Out of stock at Jab-Tech though.

Bumping this thread to for current advice on the same issue. I've got an i7 920 and want a new cooler. What would be the BEST possible choice? I'm really unsure.

if you intend to overclock that i7, you will most likely want to lap a thermalright ultra extreme 120. The extra effort is worth it for an i7, because these things run quite hot, quite hot indeed. People used to older chips hear about our temps and usually say something to the effect of "um, don't you have a heat sink installed on that thing? you didn't wrap the case in a blanket, did you?"

One company will lap it for you for 20 bucks or so....

for ease of use, its generally accepted that the noctua is the better choice... but the true on my chip dropped temps over 20 degrees (and that is with wayyyy too much thermal compound... gotta clean that off but im being lazy...)

The TRUE seems to be the best contender with i7 so far but the Noctua NH-U12P has recieved a lot of praise too. The Cooler Master V8 is also worth mentioning but the others will fare slightly better for your money. You could also try a Xigmatek Dark Knight which is cheaper and while it's not on par with the others, it's still pretty good.

Here's a link to PPCs where the Noctua, TRUE, and V8 are in stock:

Stick with the aluminum version. The copper version is only cools few degrees C better according to any info I've read about it but it weighs in at approx 1900g and is expensive. A few people have that thing around here and are perfectly content with it but c'mon guys you know it's a bling factor/e-peen thing

"few degrees C" is significant. A "couple" would be less so.
Got a link to the place you read this?
