while in most cases i would agree with you, folding loads my core to almost the same temp as prime and orthos, and folding 24/7 i want to keep my within or at least close to spec.

This is particularly true in terms of GPUs.

"Man my graphics card is running at 85C! I need a $50 cooler stat!"

Seriously, those things can take 100C easy.

I had a core get damaged when I took it over 65C. Thing is...it was at 1.65Vcore. That same chip had, repeatedly, been up that high on the stock cooler/voltages/clocks, and never hurt it. Just three or four hours there with a dangerously high Vcore damaged it, however.

If your voltages are in the safe range, and it's not throttling, yer not going to hurt it...if yer running dangerously high voltages, keep those temps down tho. They make the core much more sensitive. I backed mine off and prevented crippling damage(It still runs fine at stock), but it's not overclockable anymore.

Just a clue as to how hot it got: The corners of the IHS had burnt thermal paste on them. Yes, burnt, as in black and powdery.

Electromigration has little to do with heat IIRC. And what are you talking about with spec sheets? The spec sheets indicate throttling temps just like he says.

@gooda

On the internet you have to make sarcasm obvious, and I find [sarcasm][/sarcasm] tags tacky.

The point of throttling is to protect us. It's already one very safe way to keep us from ruining our chips, so why have us strain about our temps?

That would be like wearing 2 condoms.
"like wearing 2 condoms", LOL!

Please, please, please don't wear two condoms if you're having sex. I guarantee you they will both break.

I turned my fans off to see how high i could get.... lol. I turned them back on at 88.

But other than that one instance, I'm at 34-35 load. .... now, if only i could remember how i was going to tie this into your comment.

Edit: Oh yea. It was proving your point.

Most of the people need to understand that only 10% needs to be respected. If a chip has a TJmax of a 100c then only over 90c will damage the chip concerning lifetime issues.
