Just put a small dot on the CPU (about the size of an uncooked grain of rice). Then, just mount the cooler on the CPU, the weight of the cooler will spread the paste out for you.

If you spread it out yourself you will create air pockets that will act as an insulator. Follow ljason8eg advice.

Is a good and very easy method, the other is to put a hair's width half inch long strip horizontal for quads, vertical for duels. And again, the pressure of the cooler will spread for you.

The "X" isn't as good of a method because when you set the heatsink down and the TIM spreads, it creates air bubbles where the 2 lines come together.
