well too much past can act as insulation but if your cpu/HSF is not flat then it can create air pockets and that is also insulation and both can cause higher temps.

Thanks, I am going to reseat one more time and make sure it is really tight and not put to much paste. I think I might have put to much paste because I put on a few big globs and I have been reading that you need to put only a glob in the middle or a line down the center.

I'm running the same Mugen 2 cooler. My i7 920 is clocked (at this time) at 3.62ghz Prime95 stable for 1+hr and the temps hover around 60-61c. I use OCZ freeze and per manufacturer's recommendations I put a "rice grain" in the middle of the cpu IHS. I actually set a grain of rice next to the middle and duplicated it! The room temp is approx. 65f Vcore is 1.32000v set in BIOS
