Thumbs up Tested: HDT-S1283 w/ MX-2: Pea method vs 2-line method

Here is info I hope is useful for others that I gathered after not being satisfied with my temps using the pea method.

Rig:

Cooler: Xigmatek HDT-S1283 - Fan at 100%
TIM: MX-2
CPU: Phenom II X4 940 BE - multiplier set @ 16x (3.2GHz) - everything else set to stock

Test:
OCCT for 15minutes

Pea method:
Applied MX-2 in a small pea on the center of the CPU and squashed it with the S1283. (sorry no pics)

2-Line method:
Applied MX-2 to the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 along aluminum sink. (see pics)

Results:
Pea method Idle temp: 38 C
Pea method Max temp: 58 C
Pea method Coverage: poor

2-Line method Idle temp: 32 C
2-Line method Max temp: 51 C
2-Line method Coverage: unknown - im happy (so far)

Additional variables:
A little MX-2 was left over between the aluminum and copper heatpipes from the first application.

Thanks to the people here that gave me the idea to use the 2-line method

Pea Method CPU Coverage:

Pea Method COOLER Coverage:

2-Line Method application:

I had a silver generic heat paste on my HDT1283 but recently took it off and put on some OCZ in lines along the aluminum as well as little dabs on the copper pipes. My temps dropped by 10C, it was pretty surprising. Bumped up the OC on my Q6700 from 3.0ghz (was loading at 63C) to 3.33ghz (loading at 59C).

I always use the line method personally. The pea/rice-sized dot has always given me poor coverage...

I think for this cooler the line method works better because of the gaps between the pipes and sink dont allow the TIM to spread very well.

It's been a while, but thanks for the interest. The pea method definately sucks for this cooler.
I ended up lapping my S1283 because to me it seemed like the aluminum was protruding a couple hairs more than the copper. I'm happy with what I did and its a little cooler now.
Assuming the X4 920 and X4 940 are the same, I'd lap the CPU also.

Good luck!
