Better then that ill bet. That pre applied stuff is horrid.

IF you feel you need a cheap upgrade OP i would buy another decent fan that is that size and use one of your fans as a shroud. OR a free upgrade: use the 720BE fan as a shroud. (remove the innards) Bet youd be surprised @ the result.

you guys think that's small, check out the one that came with my 250!

I don't understand why AMD doesn't move on to 80mm fans at least >.>

70mm fans don't have as many upgrade choices as 80mm and perform worse

Oh, Heck yes. The Phenom cooler with the 4 heat pipes is a very nice cooler. One of AMDs best cooler offerings. I have this mounted on my 7750 (I paid $30 for it) it works as good as any $80 Zalman or similar higher priced design.

I just wish I could figure out how to mount a better fan on mine. My fan is a bit different than in this picture as it is integrated into the top plastic assembly.

I don't know why the give those crummy alluminum block junk with the cheaper chips. Most people just throw them away.

But the Phenom II cooler your dad is giving you is probalby as good as the aftermarket one he has mounted now. I OC my 7750 to 3.0Ghz and I have no problems keeping good temps with this cooler.

If I bought an aftermarket cooler, the one on my radar is the Silenx iXtremea 120 ($33 at Micro Center right now), or the Coolmaster V8 at about $60. But, then, if I had an extra $60 I'd just go buy a newer faster CPU.
