I don't see the problem here. You're at 60* on an overclocked cpu at 1.47 vcore.

What's the problem again?

Problem is he should be getting somewhere around 50-55C with this cooler, maybe less. I'm cooler than him and I'm running the original Scythe Mugen.

The Tmax for a 940 is only 62C.

I bet that's not the maximum for the cores.

You aren't taking everything into account, like ambient temps and placement of fans. His temps are exactly what they should be for his situation.

Phenom II max temp is 55-62. Jeez we need more AMD people around here.

P.S. If you want to decrease your temps more, go for push/pull or get a better 120x38mm fan with high static pressure (San Ace, Panaflo, Delta, etc.)

Is that the max temp for the cores, or the integrated heat spreader? Based on how similar the specs are for this CPU to many Intel CPUs, I'm going to bet that this is the maximum IHS temp.

I mean, if his temps were only 2°C away from the maximum, then don't you think that he'd be having all kinds of problems due to instability?

I think it varies by the CPU, and it refers to the cores themself. My CPU will start giving me heat related issues around the ~57 C mark. I've hit 3.75 GHz at 49 max load on my chip, maybe I'm just lucky.

Well, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised since it's a 125W CPU. But still, I'm just finding it hard to believe that 62 is like the absolute limit. I mean, are AMD's and Intel's 45nm quads really that drastically different regarding the temps?

They get unstable above 60C. I mean, the 45nm fabrication is supposed to be more heat sensitive but there seems to be a lot of variation depending on the make, for instance the i7's seem fine at 80C while the Phenom II's crash around 65C.

It is kind of strange that this quad core has about the same thermal output as my P4 Prescott.

Well, this AMD chip has a Wattage rating of 125W. I imagine that the P4 you had (or still have?) has a similar wattage rating.
