Default Big Typhoon

Recently gave up WC and the only heatsink I have is a Big Typhoon, the original one - I think there might've been a revision or something, just kinda curious where it stands these days compared to what else is on the market.

TRUE and Megahalems are out, but would a Dark Knight destroy the BT for the $40 I'd spend? Might try looking for a used TRUE as well but I've heard you can't mount that correctly on AM2?

Thanks

I've heard the regular Xiggy's without the paint are actually more efficient. Just put two Ultra Kaze's on it and you'll get great temps. Picture Below:

i know someone who JUST replaced their BT (modded to its fullest extent with nice fan) with a xiggy DK, they say it slaughters it.

Agreed.

If you're not shooting for a high overclock anyway, then one advantage that the BT has over tower coolers like the TRUE and Megahalems is that being a top-down cooler it blows airflow down onto your motherboard circuitry, MOSFETS, RAM, etc. But if maximum CPU cooling is your top priority the BT has been surpassed by many of these other coolers for sure, so you're better off with those.

However, you could always lap your BT as well. I used to have an original BT as well and I remember after lapping it brought my Opteron 165 temps down significantly. The stock base isn't really the greatest and had a lot of machine marks and fairly deep grooves. If you have the time, patience, and materials it's worth a shot.

If you're really in the mood for a modding project, here's a link to the extensive modding one of the forum member's have done to their BT:
