My Xiggy has arrived. And now I realize that when it's installed in my AM3 board, the fan will be facing the power supply. Is this a bad thing? I don't wanna have to return this and waste more time. Please help!

ouch.. sorry to hear that... seems like most xigs will face a vertical position with AMD rigs. but overall, it shouldn't be a problem.

Don't worry about it.

The reason why people don't like it when their coolers face up is because the hot air gets blown into their PSU

As long as you have a quality PSU, that shouldn't matter too much

The following are my options for mounting the Xiggy's fan:

1. Mount below, with air blowing up into the heatsink, then the air goes up into the PSU.
2. Mount above, with air blowing down into the heatsink. The fan's air flow will be opposite that of the PSU (they will be pulling against each other).
3. Mount below, sucking air from heatsink, then the air goes down towards the PCI/e slots.
4. Mount above, sucking air from heatsink, then the air goes up into the PSU.

Which of these would be best?

Other than that, I can mod the heatsink to use the retention clips from my Reeven, which would allow it to orient with the ideal front-to-back air flow. But this requires drilling screw holes on the heatsink and is a bit risky. Also the heatsink will then become more difficult to install.

What do you think?

I have it at number 1

I didn't try all of the methods listed, but I did try 2 and 4.
They're not good.

2 and 4 are not good. That leaves either 1 or 3. Just thinking about it, 3 seems bad as it would blow hot air towards my soundcard. I'll choose 1 then, and besides I trust your judgement. Thank you so much! You've saved me a lot of time experimenting.

On spreading vs bead method of applying thermal paste: For a non-HDT heat sink, which method is better? Can you post a link to any test comparing these methods and providing temp results?

Thanks!
On lapping: Definitely use water, it lubricates while it cuts and wicks away your cut material.

On spreading vs bead method of applying thermal paste: For a non-HDT heat sink the debate is still out on that, it all seems to come down to personal preference. BenchmarkReviews has a good article on both thermal pastes and what they found to be the best application method.
