I currently have a lapped TRUE on my Q9650 with a Scythe SFF21F fan. I am considering going to Core i7 920 with an EVGA Classified or EVGA X58 board.
__________________It seems kind of difficult to find the LGA1366 mounting kit for the TRUE right now. The places I like to order from are out of stock. So, I am considering trying out the LGA1366 Noctua kit. Would the Noctua perform better or worse than the TRUE? Should I keep the TRUE? How do they compare when being used on a Core i7 920. I would like to get to 4.0Ghz if I could.

The TRUE is a better cooler.
If you're wanting to get the Noctua, get the Prolimatech Megahalems for around the same price, it's the best air cooler currently. Although, I'm sure the Noctua can handle 4GHz.

I forgot about the Megahalem. How much better does that perform? Is the base finish good from the factory?

the best thing about the Megahalem is probably the mounting bracket. really easy to take it on/off as well, but it's el-gigantor. I barely managed to squeeze mine into my Antec 900. I had to pull the plastic panel off the side (it uses plastic clips to hold a fan there) as well as the wire mesh grating. For it to not interfere with my RAM (running corsair dominators with the mini-fan assembly) I had to point it at the 200mm top case fan.
__________________Having said all that, I don't think I've ever been more pleased with a cooling solution. With a ~90cfm 120x38 panaflo, it's dead quiet and even with horrid ambients (28-30c) keeps my q9450 at around 54-55c (individual core temps) under torture testing. I took a razor blade to it when I got it, and didn't notice any peaks/valleys, and from what I've read, most other people haven't found a need to lap them either.

I currently own a TRUE and a Megahalem and have owned a Noctua. I wouldnt even bother with the Noctua with i7 if your trying to get the max OC on air. I used the TRUE on my sig rig and I didnt notice any really temp difference compared to my Megahalem. You can check out the review I did in my sig of a Noctua and the Megahalem with an E8400 and Q9450.
